I'll be honest: the movie lives and dies by its two leads. They're smarter than everyone else in the movie (and still idiots), they're easy to root for (they basically protect each other) and their charm is the biggest selling point. By the end, I found myself cheering them on, regardless of their flaws. Didn't care how many drugs they consumed or felonies they committed, I just wanted them to eat donuts on the beach.
