The Biddle brothers, shot while robbing a gas station, are taken to the prison ward of the County Hospital; Ray Biddle, a rabid racist, wants no treatment from black resident Dr. Luther Brooks. When brother John dies while Luther tries to save him, Ray is certain it's murder and becomes obsessed with vengeance. But there are black racists around too, and the situation slides rapidly toward violence.

poitier did occasionally manage to break away from the "perfect" stereotype he unwittingly created. check out "a raisin in the sun" (1961) -he's a royal pain in the cock in that one! That's funny! I read about how he would apologize over and over again. In those days, you couldn't always pick your films, like they can now. richard widmark was embarrassed at having to hurl constant racial abuse at sidney poitier in this film and apologised to him after every take. he didn't apologise for getting him blown up in "the bedford incident" 15 years later. i know which i'd rather put up with - @Thursday, January 28, 2010 5:01 PM
