7.6 / 10

Jonathan Harker is sent away to Count Dracula's castle to sell him a house in Wismar where Jonathan lives. But Count Dracula is a vampire, an undead ghoul living off of men's blood. Inspired by a photograph of Lucy Harker, Jonathan's wife, Dracula moves to Wismar, bringing with him death and plague... An unusually contemplative version of Dracula, in which the vampire bears the curse of not being able to get old and die.

A very good film in itself and with a more restrained performance from Klaus Kinski. The film is highly imaginative and benefits from Werner Herzog's direction. - @Wednesday, November 1, 2017 7:31 PM

The late night dinner scene in this Dracula adaptation is off the charts. Perfect synergy between Kinski's acting and Herzog's direction. In other scenes, it takes its time. But that's the kinda movie it is, quiet, slow, mesmerizing. - @Saturday, March 11, 2017 11:39 PM

Nosferatu is gibberish. I'm Romanian and that doesn't mean anything in my language (where the word allegedly came from). The traditional Romanian word for vampire is strigoi, although most people say vampir cause of the Western influence on the language. I have a theory though. The name Nosferatu was first used in the late 1800s when some French guy came to Transylvania and wrote an article. But not understanding Romanian he wrote down some gibberish he thought he heard. I think it's actually Necuratul, which means "the unclean one" when said literally or "the unholy" one. It's usually an euphemism for the Devil itself, not just a vampire. What really bugged me about this film was the goof when the sailor said something like "it was hard sailing through the Caspian sea". Wtf? The Caspian sea is nowhere near Romania. Romania has an exist to the BLACK sea. And even so I find this sea travelling kind of ridiculous. The now Romanian region of Transylvania(wasn't part of Romania back then) is still way far off from the Black Sea. I don't get the sea part. Did they just navigate through some river (it shows peasants on a river before with the coffins), then the Danube and then into the sea? That's just going east instead of west. Or from the Black Sea to the Marmara one, Mediterranean, Atlantic through Gibraltar, and going north around the Iberian peninsula? That's going round half the continent navigating through two rivers, two big seas, a small one and the ocean. From Transylvania it would have been much shorter and easier to go on land and then just cross the English channel. As a geography buff I could never understand the sea part in all this narrative. - @Wednesday, December 14, 2016 11:38 PM

A stunning film that contains some of the greatest acting from Klaus Kinski and some inspired direction from Werner Herzog. They complimented each other so well, their 5 collaborations represent some of the best film work from Germany and indeed, from Europe in general. Kinski's performance is rather more melancholic as the Dracula type character, he expresses sadness at his ever-lasting plight, that of being an un-natural creature of the night and who must satisfy his cravings. The photography is quite breath-taking and also imaginative and thought-provoking. A masterpiece. - @Sunday, August 16, 2015 2:14 PM

I liked this movie...until the end.  Herzog did a great job of build-up of tension and atmosphere...and then gives us no payoff.  Dracula's henchman presumably leaves with the plague-infested dirt (the movie seemingly forgets about him after Dracula gives his instructions, and we have no clue what happens to him), Lucy's plan seems all thought out, and then doesn't seem to work (Jonathan's still a vampire--was Lucy trying to save him or not?) and Van Helsing... Perhaps Herzog meant to leave room for a sequel...but the sequel that WAS made (and not by him) has Kinski's Dracula come back, which makes Lucy's actions meaningless. And of course, Van Helsing as a doddering old fool who's a skeptic of vampires?  Was there a reason for Herzog to miss the point of his character entirely?  Just to make Lucy look better (even though the ending makes her look dumb, too...because Jonathan's STILL A VAMPIRE and free to rampage)? Great movie with a bad ending. - @Saturday, January 17, 2015 7:25 AM

Don't bother people, this movie is long in the tooth & the story doesn't hold to up our current level / experienced of movie audience.  the  positive reviews, especially those of the cinematic style / presentation mean nothing if it's not an enjoyable experience. - @Thursday, June 26, 2014 11:20 PM

I truly love this film, along with with original one which was always my number 1. I can't wait for this blu ray release, i always enjoy when Jonathan leaves the guesthouse for castle Dracula, i love those beautiful landscapes and waiting, because you know you'll creaking door opening and question "Graf Dracula?". The scene when Kinski walks down the dark corridor and then comes to Harker's chamber still truly terrifies me. - @Wednesday, May 14, 2014 6:42 AM
