In 2007 Prescott, Arizona, Eric Marsh of the Prescott Fire Department is frustrated fighting forest fires when the Type 1 or "Hotshot" front line forest fire fighting crews from afar overrule his operational suggestions to his area's sorrow. To change that, Marsh gets approval from the Mayor to attempt to organize an unprecedented certified municipal-based Hotshot crew for Prescott. To that end, Marsh needs new recruits, which includes the young wastrel, Brendan McDonough, to undergo the rigorous training and qualification testing for the most dangerous of fire fighting duty. Along the way, the new team meets the challenge and the hailed Granite Mountain Hotshots are born. In doing so, all the men, especially McDonough, are changed as new experience and maturity is achieved in fire-forged camaraderie. All this is put to the test in 2013 with the notorious Yarnell Hill Fire that will demand efforts and sacrifices no one can ignore.

Nobody wants to pay for firefighters until THIER shits on fire, then it's too late. Nobody knows the life we lead, and they don't care. Everybody expects "help" within moments of the 911 call, but they don't what to invest in that resource. Always underpaid and overworked, Wild-landers do it cause they love it. I did it on one fire. It would have been much better to have made a movie about the kids, wives, parents, and siblings of the dead firefighters and how their death affected their lives and how they cope. People don't understand why movies like this don't need to be made. Viewers will be always torn between rating the movie and having respect for the real life people who died, whether firefighters or just victims. The movie won't affect how much respect memory of these guys gets. But depicting them in moments leading to their deaths will raise questions as to how accurate it is and whether the director may be exaggerating, or whether their actions should at all be evaluated because it will inevitably be both, fictional situations, as well as something that really has occurred. No one who was among them to the end survived, so depicting these moments will create a bad feeling that maybe they're being aggrandized, or not shown as heroic enough. - @Wednesday, September 27, 2017 1:04 AM

Every year smokejumpers, hotshots, firefighters put their lives on line like this, in fact, as I type this hundreds are fighting numerous nasty fires right now in Oregon and the entire northwest. Some of the fires are massive, in rugged, remote, very dangerous terrain.
