Michael Jennings is a reverse engineer and what he does is technical jobs for certain companies and as soon as he is done, his memory of the work he has done is wiped out. Now the longest he has been contracted is 2 months. But now billionaire, James Rethrick offers him a job that would last 2 years, maybe 3, and he promises that he will probably earn 8 figures. Michael agrees. Before beginning he turns in all of his personal effects. And when the job is done, his memory is erased and he learns he made over 90 million dollars over the three years. When he goes to claim it and his personal effects, he discovers that prior to the erasure of his memory he waived his rights to the money he earned and that the items that were given to him were not the ones he gave when he began. Later he is arrested by the FBI who say that he committed some act of treason and murder. It's while he is in custody that he escapes using some the items that he was given. He later meets with a friend who gives ...

While watching this, I couldn't stop rolling my eyes at how stupid and formulaic I thought it was-- but the really sad part is that I know producers and writers make movies this mind-numbingly stupid because they're aware the majority of viewers will only appreciate them at that dumb level, and that this will probably strike most people as a smart film. It's like they have to slow down on every formulaic and predictable bit in the film and emphasize it majorly, so that braindead viewers will understand what's going on-- and the sad part, again, is that I know by now that otherwise audiences really won't understand what's going on. Another thing I really wish is that films would stop trying to make every story about 'romance with a beautiful woman,' and then weave in cheesy 'deep and meaningful' moments between the main character and said 'beautiful woman,' when ultimately it's some aspect of that cheesy romance that 'saves the day' in the end. (Ex., "he realized the woman he was speaking with wasn't Dr. What's-her-face because even though his memories were like 99% wiped, he could remember the way Dr. what's-her-face kissed him, and it wasn't like that" - so freaking corny). Or, [spoiler] "oh no, it turns out that by trying to prevent the world from being destroyed, we would be the very ones who would thereby bring on the world's destruction! Oh, the mind-boggling irony of it all! And only he understands that, so he's the only good guy!" - it's like the whole plot was written by a high schooler. Don't know what makes this a bad movie. It told the story and kept me entertained. Maybe they chose womanizing Affleck for the part so that we wouldn't know to expect in the story. To be honest I never saw the trailer when I saw this movie, and I never read the PKD book. So for me there were many twists in this movie including what he invented. I only recommend the original Philip K. Dick story of "Paycheck". Ben Affleck is terrible in this movie! He can wear glasses and pretend like he's smart all he wants but he's not a smart reverse engineer! He's the average guy next door who likes the red socks and charms the girls.
