Action Comedy Drama Music

7.4 / 10

"The Boat That Rocked" is an ensemble comedy in which the romance takes place between the young people of the '60s and pop music. It's about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that wanted classical music, and nothing else, on the airwaves. The Count, a big, brash, American god of the airwaves; Quentin, the boss of Radio Rock -- a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea that's populated by an eclectic crew of rock and roll DJs; Gavin, the greatest DJ in Britain who has just returned from his drug tour of America to reclaim his rightful position; Dave, an ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny co-broadcaster; and a fearsome British government official out for blood against the drug takers and lawbreakers of a once-great nation.

Great movie. Should be a cult classic. Saw it when it came out, just saw it again last night. Also enjoyed the deleted scenes. I really liked all the characters in it. I could have seen this being a great show on HBO. Too bad it was a commercial flop. Great music, great actors, lots of comedy. Gavin had a little Spinal Tap going, while you got a nice cross section of the entire UK with Gavin, Thick Kevin, Dave, Angus, Simon, Bob, Mark, Harold, Felicity, Carl and cool Quentin in charge plus the Count from America. One of the biggest omissions in the movie is The Beatles of course, but they obviously couldn't afford the rights. In one deleted scene, the Count takes them to EMI Studios aka Abbey Road (which in 1966 would have been called EMI Studios) and salutes the Beatles, but ironically no Beatles music is played at all in the movie. Probably the reason they deleted it was to keep people from wondering why there was no Beatles music in the movie. I would have liked a scene added where one of the DJs gets all excited by a brand new album or song by his favorite group and plays it for the first time on the radio - only to sit there with a frown because he hates what he's hearing and then rips it off the record player saying "Well that's enough of that!" - @Saturday, September 16, 2017 5:09 PM

it was a good film, but I don't like how the trailer implied that it was about an American DJ when it focuses on a boy coming of age... and losing his virginity. - @Saturday, December 10, 2016 2:23 PM

Any libertarian would agree Pirate Radio is quotable. The trailer itself has two of my favorites: "That's the whole point of being the government: if you don't like something, you simply make it illegal," and "governments loathe people being free." Not to mention, all the kickass rock and roll music doused all over the movie and the trailer. It's amazing. - @Friday, May 8, 2015 6:10 AM

Nothing like how it was for real. This is just a "fun" movie but in no way is it history and how it really was. In fact about 95 % of this movie is not fact but just a made-up story line. The only part of this movie thats good is the music. - @Tuesday, December 10, 2013 1:00 AM

Britain: small area, high power economy, close ally, with a long national history, and roughly 1/4th or 1/5th the population of the USA despite the region's size. No my dear people give a damn about Britain. "Brain dead Americans who give the rest of us a bad appearance to the rest of the world because they're to lazy to pay attention to anything in the rest of the world don't give a damn" is perhaps what you meant to say. It's people like you that the rest of the world hates us good day! - @Saturday, October 5, 2013 11:29 AM
