Engineers Aaron, Abe, Robert and Phillip are working on an invention, the prototype being built in Aaron's garage. This project is beyond their day jobs. The project truly does belong to Aaron and Abe, as they use all their free time working on it, primarily trying to overcome the many engineering related problems they've encountered. It is during one of his tests with the invention running that Abe discovers that a protein inside the main unit has multiplied much more rapidly than it could in nature. Rather than the invention being a protein super incubator, Abe, using himself as a guinea pig, and a very meticulous one at that, discovers that the invention can be used as a time machine. In his self experiment, Abe was especially careful not to interfere with his own self in that time warp. Abe passes along this discovery to Aaron, who he expects will tell his wife Kara in what is the sanctity of their marriage, but he doesn't want to tell either Robert or Phillip. Much to Abe's ...

Looper actually doesn't contradict itself. You THINK it does because you're stuck with old sci-fi ideas about how time travel works. Also, you still believe that TIME is a constant. Especially with such a complex and intricate story. I feel with a higher budget could of helped explain some things better but Shane really did the absolute best that he could with the 7k budget. I don't think even Einstein would've understood this movie in one sitting. The trailer doesn't spoil anything and the movie IS thought-provoking. Nothing is dumbed down! If you haven't seen Primer yet I'd suggest you watch it. If you've already seen it, I'd say watch it again... and again. It's worth it in the end. If you're impatient, wikipedia will be your friend, especially the external links. I thought Inception was the ultimate mindfuck movie of all time but I saw Primer last night and it blew it away with its sheer cleverness. This movie didn't just fuck my mind it raped it in the asshole and then went back in time and raped it again at the same time before I even watched the movie but since I hadn't watched the movie yet it couldn't have raped me but it still did even though I never watched but watched over and over.
