A sinister secret has been kept in the basement of an abandoned Los Angeles church for many years. With the death of a priest belonging to a mysterious sect, another priest opens the door to the basement and discovers a vat containing a green liquid. The priest contacts a group of physics graduate students to investigate it. Unfortunately, they discover that the liquid contains the essence of Satan himself, and they also discover that he will release HIS father - an all-powerful Anti-God! The liquid later comes to life itself, turning some of the students into zombies as the Devil comes forward to release his father. Will these students be able to stop him?

Totally agree with Maicol Mallers below - a lot of the "it makes no sense" complaints are laid out in one scene (where they talk about the translation in the journal). I think people go into this expecting it to be like every other "religious" horror movie, like "The Exorcist" or "The Omen," but it's actually more like a sci-fi/cosmic horror movie with religious horror movie trappings...like "Quatermass and the Pit," which was the story/movie Carpenter was paying homage to with Prince of Darkness. - @Thursday, August 4, 2016 6:06 PM

Haven't seen this one yet, but if it's heavily influenced by Lovecraft as Mouth of Madness and The Thing were, it would make sense for the "monsters" to not make sense to humankind, or really care or notice us one way or another beyond their own preservation or mutual ('side')effects on eachother. Sidenote: R Scott's Prometheus definitely took heavily from Lovecraft's Mountains of Madness (as did Carpenter's brilliant The Thing) tho Scott injected very blatant Christianity where it definitely wasn't present before. Ti is the man. with all that said, Carpenter's best, this isn't even in the conversation when it comes from a man who has made Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, They Live, Assault on precinct 13(original); that's the A list. What's hard to understand here? The movie is so literal that the portrayed ideas are rather hard to accept: Jesus was "just" an alien whose ideas took 2k years to be explained while the church chose to deny the fact the devil is here and will bring his father. So, if you pray in despair now no one is listening, yet the fiend is coming.
