Genres & Description

Action Drama

6.6 / 10

Corporate salesman Steve Butler (Matt Damon) arrives in a rural town with his sales partner, Sue Thomason (McDormand). With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company's offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of a respected schoolteacher (Holbrook) with support from a grassroots campaign led by another man (Krasinski) who counters Steve both personally and professionally.

People have been smoking cigarettes for years, and it is only relatively recently that the link between smoking tobacco and cancer has been publicly acknowledged. Imagine if we had put some serious impartial research into the dangers of cigarettes in 1912 when American Dr. Isaac Adler made the link between lung cancer and tobacco, many lives would have potentially been saved. - @Thursday, January 17, 2013 11:01 PM

Hmmm... double hmmmm... I'm pretty sure we all see the 'twist' coming, without it there is no point in watching the movie. Dov S 'Greatest film educator in the whole world' Simmons put it this way: "In any movie, you know the outcome in the first 10 minutes, if you don't you ain't watching the movie. Once established it is the film-makers job to make you doubt that outcome" Based on this trailer, I really wanna see it because I want to believe that a hardened gas-man has a heart and can change. - @Sunday, January 6, 2013 9:39 AM

This was one of the most ponderous pieces of agitprop I have ever had the misfortune to endure. Recently, I've seen two movies that were over three hours long and combined they felt shorter than this dismal dog turd. Imagine the most boring, interminable sermon you have ever witnessed and you'll have a good idea what this film felt like. And the plot "twist" is a classic example of telegraphing the pass. Only audience members with the IQ of plankton won't see it coming. - @Saturday, January 5, 2013 10:40 PM

The guy from the office really works for the same company as Matt Damien. Also fracking has never been linked to any environmental harm. If you don't like fracking you are a racist because you don't want to see poor rural black people get out of poverty. - @Tuesday, January 1, 2013 2:11 PM

Interesteing that all of these comments about a trailer, not the actual movie, which hasn't been released yet, are by so many experts who already seem to have the movie figured out and what it represents. Yeah, what a dumb movie, I actually live in the marcellus shale area and if they showed what really happens to people in fracking areas, people would flip out. 5 year old kids hair falling out from drinking their own well water. Frackers are deauchbags and evry time a well blows up and kids some frackers I dance with joy in my living room. Frucking frackhed motherfruckers. - @Saturday, December 22, 2012 9:40 PM

The response to the Davies letter explictly states, "In summary, we agree with Davies (1) that our 'data showed that contamination had occurred, but the association with hydraulic fractures remains unproven.'" Furthermore, it is not bold whatsoever considering the caveat included. Currently, there is no evidence (zero) to support the notion that drinking water is being negatively impacted. The authors of your study agree that even if it were proven it is "not a health hazard for ingestion." - @Thursday, December 13, 2012 5:00 PM

Antonio Acevedo
I understand that I only listed one study, and I also read the PNAS letters that tried disputing it. However, the authors of the original study replied in detail in the letter below: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov*pmc*articles*PMC3174673* (replace * with / and add world wide web) I think it is a bold statement to say that "no consumed drinking water has been adversely impacted..None". Unless you have personally tested every active well near every drilling site you cannot support that claim. - @Thursday, December 13, 2012 4:18 PM

ARKAEA33
authors* - @Thursday, December 13, 2012 3:44 PM

ARKAEA33
I did as you said and got one study that was very preliminary and disputed by multiple PNAS letters. Even the author of your suggested study concluded that their goal was "to ensure the sustainable future of shale-gas extraction and to improve public confidence in its use." So, pro-fracking positions all around. This, of course, with the fact that no consumed drinking water has been adversely impacted as of now. None. - @Thursday, December 13, 2012 3:43 PM
