While this movie had some potential, the shot by shotness did NOT help it at all. They might as well have had the actors from the original star in this one too, even if there were ones that were dead by the time this came out. - @Monday, June 17, 2013 9:55 PM

From what i know gus van sant, intended it to be just like that, a strict copy of it, both in a conceptual and respectful way,and also (mayby) to point out how the all industry of remaking movies in hollywood is foolish and only based on profit motives. If you know gus van sant, then you surely know he's more than a great director. By the way, an artist did painted a moustache on mona lisa, his name is Duchamp, one of the first conceptual artist, who did that in order to provoke the bourgeois.. - @Monday, May 13, 2013 10:41 PM

This movie had nothing wrong with it, it just it was really unnecessary for their to be a shot-for-shot remake of a classic. Really though if you look at it, the acting was not bad and the cinematography was perfect. Its just this movie was really unnecessary - @Thursday, August 30, 2012 9:02 PM

Yes. This is what happens when movies get made by people who have no idea why the first one was even good. You give away the secret in the trailer, cast an unattractive woman who no one would buy as the fake-lead anyway, throw in a bunch of "kewl" MTV-fast-cuts that make little sense and aren't scary or believable for how a psychopath would think...and you end up with a giant mediocre turkey for a movie. Even as a shot-by-shot remake it fails. Money and new technology can't replace talent. - @Thursday, August 2, 2012 12:22 AM

I have always seen Vince Vaughn in comedy films. I cannot help but laugh just at his sight. This movie doesn't even look as serious as the 1960 one. Tony Perkins was so hottt. - @Saturday, March 10, 2012 7:29 PM

@BYOSProductions I can see a better marketing technique: Have a shot of Norman Bates' mother looking away, holding a knife in her hand with a caption that reads, "We all go a little mad sometimes." The overall idea being that they would have wanted to keep the focus on his mother. I think that whoever did the marketing just assumed that everybody had seen the original. - @Wednesday, December 7, 2011 10:49 AM

I didn't even know there was a remake until we had to watch (the original) for my film class and one of my classmates said, "It's the one with Vince Vaughn, right?" I was like, "Are you serious?" - @Monday, October 24, 2011 7:21 PM

@DuracellEnergizer Not true. A film can start out as a remake, but eventually become a Re-imagining. If one alteration is made to the subject matter than the film becomes a re-imagining. Look at Little Shop Of Horrors for example. For a while the original ending was that Seymour was going to jump inside Audrey 2 to save the original Audrey and end up dying. However, later, the ending was changed to Seymour killing the plant. It was at that moment the story became a re-imagining. - @Sunday, September 4, 2011 12:31 AM

Duragizer
@Scoonertuna Um, no. Remakes more-or-less follow the same plots of the films they're based on, while reimaginings take only a few elements from the original films and then go off in entirely different directions plotwise. - @Saturday, September 3, 2011 8:39 PM

Scoonertuna
This is a true remake. Every other remake is just a re-imagining. - @Friday, September 2, 2011 8:09 AM
