Don Siegel wrote at length about the making of this movie in his excellent autobiography. Apparently Walter Wanger (who also produced INVASION OF THE BODYSNATCHERS) was one of the very few producers who Don didn't have utter contempt for. There's a great story about how Sam Peckinpah (or his family name) helped secure the right to shoot on location at Folsom, and how Leo Gordon broke down in tears of gratitude for the chance Siegel was offering the ex-con. Leo Gordon not only enjoyed a long career as an actor, he also wrote screenplays.
