Faint Haunting Memory of Bottoms' Missing Eyes... Sitting on the edge of the bed, frenziedly pulling on some well-worn sneakers, softly tantalizing golden-hued streams of a June sun shimmering through the bedroom window. A twelve year old filmic mind is reeling, edgy with anticipation, as I readied myself to go solo to a movie "Downtown" for the first time. A prepubescent "Event" of the highest order, the euphoric suspense of possibilities was unbearable; the perfectly ideal pairing of 'Coasters and ""SENSURROUND"" promising a sonorous seismic spectacular like never before. Have never forgotten this idyllic n' cherished childhood film-going memory. Had the pleasure of seeing it again the following summer in re-release, sadly devoid of "Sensurround", in a (James Goldstone / Universal) Hard-Top Double-Bill with "Swashbuckler". Curiously, it appears all existing prints are now strangely shorn of Timothy's final chilling Close-Up... - @Friday, June 13, 2014 6:32 PM

My sisters and I went to see this at the theater when it came out. Sensurround was the big new thing and I was excited but one of my sisters, who gets dizzy easily, was squeamish about seeing it. She decided to take the end seat in case she had to leave/head to the bathroom. Well, some guy came and sat behind her and he brought KIPPERS as a snack to eat at the theater! The smell & movie combined made her so sick.. Over 35 years later and I still remember this and I bet she does, too! - @Wednesday, November 6, 2013 7:29 AM

still love this movie!...I remember seeing this when I was 10 in the theater, but instead of scaring me into never liking rollercoasters, it had the opposite effect and I LOVE them!!!...I still to this day think about this movie when I am going up the lift hill! - @Monday, April 22, 2013 6:46 PM

This was a great movie for its time in 1977. It was made during the era of true suspense films. Timothy Bottoms did an excellent job in playing the terrorist/extortionist. He was extremely brilliant in everything he did, including outsmarting federal agent Hoyt and his men at the park in Richmond,V.A. The disaster that took place at the Ocean View Amusement Park was excruciating and horrifying to watch, but it demonstrated that he meant business. He sure got it in the end though in a unique way! - @Sunday, July 29, 2012 6:50 AM

The movie was shot first at Kings Dominion park just outside of Richmond (Doswell VA) and the climax was shot at Magic Mountain at Valencia CA. Great movie even if not seen in Sensurround good action tale one of my favorate movies!! - @Thursday, July 19, 2012 2:05 PM

Went to see Rollercoaster at the Elephant & Castle cinema, Old Kent Road , London. A real flea pit. When the Sensurround started the whole cinema staring shaking and falling apart.....lol!. A part of the light fitting came loose and fell down on top of people in front.....lol. I think it was just a massive bass speaker, like the size of a car specially installed for the film. - @Thursday, June 14, 2012 4:36 PM

@sideshowcarny skrew all y'all! I know these comments are a couple years old. but a lot of this movie was filmed at Kings Dominion in Doswell Virginia, the year it opened up! the rebel yell is still there, the one cop guy rides on, the little scooby doo coaster at the suitcase drop off is still there. they took out the cable car sky ride though. - @Thursday, January 19, 2012 3:59 AM

The steel white coaster is revolution for sure because you can see the magic mountain observation tower in the background. But it looks like this film was shot in a variety of theme parks. - @Thursday, June 23, 2011 12:32 AM

Three parks were used.... Ocean View Amusement Park (defunct) in Norfolk, Virginia; Kings Dominion (Doswell, Virginia), and Magic Mountain in California. - @Saturday, April 23, 2011 5:42 PM

@muthahoho Actually you are wrong, the last part of this film was shot at Magic Mountain in California. My older sister worked there (and was an extra) during the time when they were filming the final scenes for this movie at the amusement park. The white coaster at the end credits of this movie is the Revolution at Magic Mountain. - @Friday, February 18, 2011 2:39 AM

@muthahoho There are several parks in this movie. The climax was shot at Magic Mountain in Valencia CA. Not sure where the other parks were but you are probably correct that some of it was shot in VA. - @Saturday, November 20, 2010 4:25 AM

You're absolutely correct. I saw the movie "Midway", which was also done in the "sensurround" format. Kick butt features when bombs dropping out of the Zeros hit the decks of carriers. - @Tuesday, July 14, 2009 1:32 AM

Ken, I know that. You are not crazy. I was just a bit surprised reading all that. it sounds like a ride in a cinema.Sorry about your father.Yeah, the sound system was a 'big deal' back then. Kinda like a good laugh while the movie is in a suspenseful scene. The theaters had troubles with the system as well. Not many people were happy about the vibrations underneath their seats.I understand what you are saying though. The film 'Midway' was another flick that used this gimmick.Ken, thumbs up to you! - @Sunday, June 28, 2009 5:56 AM

kenpalmer1965
Hey, I didn't mean to come off as making a crazy statement here. I was merely reflecting on what my parents told me when I was younger about the movie. My father passed away in December of 2007, so I will have to ask my mother about this. I hope she will remember. Ken Palmer - @Sunday, June 28, 2009 3:31 AM

***** Electric-Shock *****
Let me correct myself, Ken. This film was using a vibrating sound system used by the film company. It was 1st used in Earthquake to draw in moviegoers from televisions. The system used a subwoofer to vibrate the theater seats. Other films were made using the same technique. . - @Sunday, June 28, 2009 2:43 AM

***** Electric-Shock *****
WHAT! This movie had sensurround. Ask your parents if the seats shook. Moving horizontal, verticle seats in an everyday 1970s cinema? NEVER. I was there. That was the craziest statement I have ever read on YT from you, - @Saturday, June 27, 2009 1:08 PM

kenpalmer1965
My parents saw this when it first came out in the theatre. When the coaster would go into a dip and come back up, the theatre seats would decline and come back up as well.Great suspense film! Loved it back then and still do today! Ken Palmer - @Monday, April 27, 2009 3:53 AM
