Action Crime Drama Thriller

8.2 / 10

A wandering samurai, Sanjuro, is drawn into local politics. The Superintendent of a clan is plotting to take over the clan by implicating the Chamberlain in corrupt activities (activities the Superintendent is actually responsible for). Part of the plan involves killing off the Chamberlain's staff and, in protecting them, Sanjuro sides with them. The supporters are massively outnumbered so it will require all of Sanjuro's cunning and swordcraft to ensure the Superintendent does not succeed in his evil plan.

Yojimbo is a good movie, but I think Sanjuro is better. Bless you Kurosawa - @Tuesday, August 14, 2018 6:22 AM

The one thing I just didn't like about Sanjuro were the mother and daughter characters. I thought they were acting a bit frivolous. They were just there talking about all kinds of things that just kinda were distracting from the so serious plot. The film could have worked better without them, in my opinion. I'll give the film a 9/10. - @Tuesday, May 29, 2018 3:50 PM

Love this movie. What an odd trailer though lol. - @Sunday, November 19, 2017 6:23 PM

- @Sunday, May 8, 2016 4:43 AM

One of the almost infinite reasons why the movies of Akira Kurosawa are almost divine is the fact that in them you see real humans doing real humans things like climbing walls, opening doors, stalking on the road and so on instead of the computer created acrobatic jumping and fighting of today; and because of this Kurosawa’s movies are so enthralling and can be watched over and over again, while at least I can’t endure to watch most contemporary movies even once. - @Saturday, July 27, 2013 4:22 AM

Masterworks tend to be watched all over again and this is especially true for the movies of Akira Kurosawa; and Sanjuro is like all the other Samurai tales of Kurosawa a true masterwork and a powerful illustration of the old Japanese culture, which seem to have been replaced by the liberal trash culture of the Americans recently; and Kurosawa did compose here a fine epic tale about an old Samurai helping out some younglings on a quest to bring down some corrupt officials. - @Monday, July 22, 2013 3:31 AM

you're insane. they made just as much silly stuff back then as they do now. probably more proportionally, but you don't know about it because it doesn't stand the test of time. that's why the past so often looks better. because all the terrible movie don't get reprints, rereleases. they don't get remembered. and there are amazing movies made in the past 5-10 years by all three countries you mention. kikujiro. trainspotting. (close enough). hurt locker. 3 at random. - @Thursday, April 18, 2013 10:35 PM

Bullshit. Japanese have always made anime for shojo. Americans have always made big budget shit movies for money. And the British have always made as many good films as the many bad. - @Wednesday, March 6, 2013 5:36 AM

God damned awesome. Man, they used to make such great movies back then. Nowadays its all about children adventure books or retarded comedies. - @Monday, May 7, 2012 7:47 AM

And this tale very much reminds me of the Viking feuds and fights in the Edda: A limited scenery and ordinary people facing a common problem, like corruption and abuse of power; even the mastery of the sword is highly creditable as in ancient times a seasoned, brave warrior in good practice was superior to many opponents – very unlike the boring shooting movies of the dull-brained Americans! Shame that this method of movie making did not prevails on the globe. - @Monday, May 9, 2011 2:25 PM

Monsieur Kurosawa is indeed much more than merely the greatest movie director that ever lived in the tide of times! I do rank him almost as high as the composers of the great epics like the Iliad, Pharsalia, the Song of the Nibelungs and the Edda! Though the influence of Zen-Buddhism does cast some darkness and decadence upon his works with its negative perception of humanity and life; and I am always stunned that the camera takes part in the tale as an observer, who is not marked. - @Monday, May 9, 2011 2:22 PM
