It's the off-season at the lonely Beauregard Hotel in Bournemoth, and only the long-term tenants are still in residence. Life at the Beauregard is stirred up, however, when the beautiful Ann Shankland arrives to see her alcoholic ex-husband, John Malcolm, who is secretly engaged to Pat Cooper, the woman who runs the hotel. Meanwhile, snobbish Mrs Railton-Bell discovers that the kindly if rather doddering Major Pollock is not what he appears to be. The news is particularly shocking for her frail daughter, Sibyl, who is secretly in love with the Major.

Another example of Burt Lancaster's wide range as an accomplished and talented actor, he seems so comfortable and relaxed no matter what character or role he plays. This was the second time he played along side that other great actress Deborah Kerr. He was to play along side her in The Gypsy Moths some years later. - @Sunday, May 17, 2015 11:46 AM

If you closely watch Burt Lancaster during his early, hustling days he kind of reminds you of Tom Cruise. Only, guess what? Tom C.'s acting range has never expanded with the years---it's still "all the way from A to B." (It seems that he'll be in action/adventure until DeathDay.) For example, I've never seen Cruise attempt anything as mature as Lancaster, such as Birdman of Alcatraz, Judgment at Nuremberg, or even Separate Tables.
