John Gregory, who is a seventh son of a seventh son and also the local spook, has protected his country from witches, boggarts, ghouls and all manner of things that go bump in the night. However John is not young anymore, and has been seeking an apprentice to carry on his trade. Most have failed to survive. The last hope is a young farmer's son named Thomas Ward. Will he survive the training to become the spook that so many others couldn't? Should he trust the girl with pointy shoes? How can Thomas stand a chance against Mother Malkin, the most dangerous witch in the county?

Having both read the books and watched the movie, I think it is a terrible adaptation of the books, there's no doubt about that. They just took the names of the characters and the general plot and molded a completely new story around it. I expected a lot, and hoped that they would possibly just make it like the first book, similar to how the Harry Potter movies were. But to say I was disappointed would be an understatement. It barely does the books justice. However, as a stand alone movie to people who have never read or heard of the books, it is completely fine. It has a lot of features that are pleasing to see in generic movies: An antagonist with a loose backstory that needs to be defeated, a montage of preparing for that final battle, a romantic interest and a self-sacrifice. The fact that Mother Malkin isn't an old hag and is actually pretty portrays her as a more powerful being, and the fact that she is the main antagonist for the whole movie makes this more understandable. If you don't understand what I mean, I'll explain: In the first book, Mother Malkin only comes into play later on, and is defeated fairly quickly, at least in her own body. Whereas in the movie she is present from the get-go. If she was to be an old woman in the movie, she wouldn't have been a formidable enemy, and the end battle would have been anti-climactic. By movie standards, antagonists need to look the part, and an old woman who is hunched over and hobbles around at the speed of a snail doesn't satisfy this. In that sense, I don't blame the movie for doing this. One thing that I can't stand for is the considerable age differences in the characters. I understand that for the romantic aspects to work they needed older characters, but I still think that they could have done this with a younger cast. If Tom and Alice were younger, maybe more on the teen side, this in my opinion would not only stay truer to the books, but also make their heroism and power more impressive. And that wouldn't necessarily negate the romantic side, either. If I remember correctly, Tom and Alice have sex in Seventh Son, right? Correct me if I'm wrong. But, if they were younger, that could have been taken out, but there could still have been a romance between them, much like there is in the later books in the series. As for the Spook, I feel like they tried to combine him and Bill Arkwright in the movie, as there is a montage of him teaching Tom combat and he also drinks in the movie. This doesn't bother me as such, as it makes for a smoother plot and cuts out the time that would have been needed to introduce Arkwright. This may sound silly, but what bothers me the most about the portrayal of the Spook is his long hair, as in the silhouetted pictures in the books he is clearly shown as having SHORT hair! It bothers me. This comment went on longer than I expected, and it's kind of turned into a mini-review I guess. Oh well. - @Monday, February 19, 2018 3:42 PM
