Just prior to World War One the hard drinking sharpshooting, Irish American Colonel Flynn O'Flynn, uses British aristocrat Sebastian Oldsmith to help poach ivory from German controlled territory in East Africa, putting them at odds with Herman Fleischer, the local German Provincial Commander. When Sebastian is infected with malaria he is nursed back to health by Flynn's daughter Rosa, they fall in love and marry. Not long after Britain declares war on Germany and they are drawn into the conflict, ultimately making a daring attack on the German armored cruiser SMS Blücher as it undergoes repairs in a local estuary.

Pretty dumb premise. Marvin is an Irish American plotting with a British guy (Moore) to blow up a German ship. An Irish guy would have been on the German side against the British. - @Saturday, November 5, 2016 3:40 PM

I saw this movie a long time ago somewhere between 1976 and 1978 in the Caribbean or maybe in Bermuda. It was entertaining but cheesy (not realistic). It was an okay movie to pass the time but nothing to write home about. The whole plot, acting, and general production values seemed a bit below what it should have been to make the movie more authentic. - @Thursday, October 27, 2016 1:56 AM

there was never a German "battlecruiser" in the Indian ocean. during WW I. Only a light cruiser the SMS Koenigberg was stationed there and sunk in the Rufiji river thru sheeling by British ships. Its guns were removed and with the crew from the ship incorprated ionto von Lettow-Vorvecks colonial force. The guns were transported via huge iron wheels. - @Tuesday, April 23, 2013 4:59 PM

It is available on to BBC iplayer at the moment, in a decent 127 minute cut. I love this film. Its daft and fun for the first half, but brutal and tragic for the second. Indeed flawed,,,but just has that magical feel to it,,great characters,,good production,,well shot,,,,Lee Marvin at his best. - @Sunday, April 7, 2013 2:17 PM

This is easily Marvin's best role. Why on earth can I not find it on iTunes or even DVD??? If ANYONE knows where I can get it on either, PLEASE email me at [email protected]. THANK YOU!! - @Monday, September 20, 2010 2:54 AM
