When a Russian satellite orbiting the Earth starts to veer off course. It seems like the guidance system in the satellite is of American origin. It's important to try and fix it before it comes into the atmosphere. The NASA man, Bob Gerson tries to find out who designed it and discovers that it was designed by Frank Corvin, an Air Force pilot who 40 years ago was part of the team who was originally suppose to go to space but when NASA was formed and Gerson's influence they were dropped. Gerson asks Frank to help but Frank still holds a grudge. But after some prodding he agrees but only if he and his team can go there so he can fix it. Gerson reluctantly agrees so Frank recruits his former team members, Tank Sullivan, Jerry O'Neill and Hawk Hawkins to join him. After some strenuous tests, they're cleared. And they go up with two other astronauts and check out the satellite and discover that they weren't told the whole truth.

An interesting movie with a great cast. But one cannot help but notice it has virtually the same plot as "Armageddon" which was made just 2 years earlier. Both plots involve using non conventional "astronauts" to save the earth from impending doom. - @Thursday, June 1, 2017 2:44 PM

Absolutely fantastic flick! This trailer is horrible, it makes the movie look corny, lame and cliche. It's actually a phenomenal story that takes an arguably absurd premise and effectively suspends disbelief. Ironically, it is the captivating performances by the four aging astronauts themselves that will effectively distract you from the subtle inconsistencies of the film, such as their low-budget approach to a zero gravity environment. There actually was a real X-2 aircraft, but it was a single seater, not a two seater as in "Space Cowboys". 2 were built. One exploded during a test, killing the pilot. The other was the first aircraft to reach Mach 3, but the pilot, Milburn "Mel" Apt (his first flight in the plane) lost control and was killed. Apart from the two seat cockpit, the aircraft in the movie looks like the real X-2. Also, the U S Air Force actually had a manned spaceflight progam, the "Man In Space Soonest", until the Government decided that NASA should administrate all manned spaceflight, and killed it. - @Saturday, July 26, 2014 10:18 AM
