After stopping off at Starbase Yorktown, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by an unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. Though the film is by no means perfect and a lot of the bad guys dialogue was painfully generic like a part where he responds to a particular threat with the words "I'm counting on it." I like how a lot of the time it does feel like just an episode of Star Trek because it's not trying to introduce the crew or turn the entire TV series into a film. (Spoiler Warning) I like the twist about the bad guy. But I'm still irritated by a lot of the bad guys logic. "War is good because it makes us strong. Piece is bad because it makes us weak." Of course if you're not at war then you don't need to be strong except as a deterrent against future war. Having a strong military to prevent war is very logical. But starting a war to make the country/planet/whatever strong defeats the point. Then there is the fact that the bad guy is a bit of a psycho from being shipwrecked. But I get the impression he became an immortal king of the entire planet overnight. It really doesn't seem like such a bad place to retire on. But more importantly his new subjects had space travel. He could have probably left within the first week if he had wanted to. That part I don't think was ever really addressed. - @Tuesday, October 10, 2017 4:39 AM
