A massive alien spacecraft of enormous power destroys three powerful Klingon cruisers, entering Federation space. Admiral James T. Kirk is ordered to take command of the USS Enterprise for the first time since her historic five-year mission. The Epsilon IX space station alerts the Federation, but they are also destroyed by the alien spacecraft. The only starship in range is the Enterprise, after undergoing a major overhaul at Spacedock on Earth. Kirk rounds up the rest of his crew, and acquires some new members, and sets off to intercept the alien spacecraft. However, it has been three years since Kirk last commanded the Enterprise - is he up to the task of saving Earth?

I can just imagine how Star Trek fans went crazy back in the 70’s when all that you needed to know from this teaser is that “Star Trek Is Back” - @Tuesday, November 27, 2018 7:23 AM

It almost sounds exactly like the THX Deep Note at the end of the trailer. - @Saturday, June 9, 2018 1:34 AM

Man that trailer sucked. Couldn’t have drum up much hype for the film. To be clear I still think the Motion picture is the best Star Trek movie and most true to the show, but they could have made this look a lot more exciting. I recommend checking out the “modern trailer” for a good laugh. 🖖🏼 - @Saturday, January 20, 2018 4:44 AM

True story: Orson Welles, who narrated this trailer, purposely kept screwing up the line "A Robert Wise film". Welles still greatly resented Wise for what he did to THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS. - @Saturday, September 17, 2016 12:41 PM

The funny thing about this teaser was that it was better than the preview that succeeded it. - @Sunday, June 12, 2016 6:07 AM

Know what a cult phenomena Trek was in the 70's, I can just imagine the audience reactions to seeing this teaser in the theatres. And I just love the audio and visual effects in this. And Orson Welles narrating! - @Sunday, April 5, 2015 6:23 PM

The best of them all. Treks 2 - 10 were overblown episodes, and Abrahms simply produced Star Wars movies disguised as Trek. Trek TMP was the only Trek film which felt like a true feature film, played like a feature film, carried the wonderous, inquisitive, curious, and adventurous spirit of Trek, and asked the audience to think, rather than feel. No wonder they kicked Roddenberry out of production for the second one: this film was too cerebral for theater audiences. Especially after the box office success of (shudder) Star Wars.  The space fantasy which ruined mainstream theatrical "Science Fiction" for the next 20 years. I was born into Trek, I was raised on Trek, and TNG was my "bread and butter" as a child of the 80s/90s.  But Trek TMP will always be my favorite film in the franchise.  :) - @Saturday, January 24, 2015 5:17 AM

Anybody else notice "THX:  The sound you hear is loud" beginning around 1:47? - @Tuesday, July 29, 2014 2:41 AM

That's Orson Welles, anyone else expected him to start talking about frozen peas or fish sticks? Or say rosebud. - @Saturday, July 26, 2014 10:19 PM

Is it just me, or some others think that the young Stephen Collins looks like Michael Fassbender? JUST a thought, not a fact :) - @Monday, August 26, 2013 8:24 AM

The sound at the end of the trailer is almost exactly like the THX sound, only slightly more drawn out. - @Friday, August 3, 2012 4:40 PM

They might do so for Star Trek's 50th anniversary. I imagine the original cast movies would be re-released in theaters like Star Wars. - @Thursday, March 29, 2012 2:35 AM

I actually agree with that. Its not my favorite, but it did have the feel of what it would be like to be in space. What are the dangers of being in starfleet (such as the very scary transporter accident), we get the first glimpse of starfleet headquarters (its just enough to give you a hint but doesn't show THAT MUCH). It was the tone of the film that does it. - @Thursday, March 29, 2012 2:33 AM

Of all the Trek films featuring the original cast, this is the only one that had the 'feeling' of being in the 23rd century. My favorite of the first six films! - @Friday, April 29, 2011 10:48 PM
