After years of stability, the lives of octogenarian couple, Craig and Irene Morrison, are slowly beginning to change. Because of changing times and regulations, they are no longer able to make a living from their small coastal New Brunswick farm. And Irene has begun to show signs of early dementia. Against the wishes of their two offspring who still reside in the area and who would like to see more standard care provided for Irene, Craig, the son of a master shipbuilder who inherited his father's building abilities, decides to mill lumber from trees on their property and with it build a more suitable, small one story house on the property in which he and Irene can live. Beginning this project with only a design in his mind, he is encouraged by friends at least to go through the regulatory process of building permits and the like. Despite being able to complete this project to more than exacting centuries old standards, Craig ends up hitting one roadblock after another in this ...

Cromwell was 72 when played the role of Morrison from ages 87 to 91. Although looking convincingly older than he actually was, he wasn't 87 by any stretch. I don't mean this as criticism, but rather to point out that the real-life 91year-old Morrison was all the more amazing to be this hard-working & resilient. - @Wednesday, November 19, 2014 3:23 PM

Morrison's fight wasn't over until he was 91. Even after he & Irene lived in the new house, the law considered forcibly removing them to bulldoze it down. Thank God a rational judge refused to put a 91 year old in jail for living in a home he built himself. He died at age 92. Good movie !! James Cromwell and Genevieve Bujold are excellent in this. Makes you a little mad seeing how the world today is getting more and more wrapped up with permits, codes, ordinances, inspections, fees, fines, etc etc... Loved James Cromwell's character and how determined he was to do what he thought was right against all odds. I wish there was a little more clarity to the court case and the ending, but I still think this is a great love story of an elderly couple. Cromwell and Bujold worked so well together. I don't think I've seen this kind of chemistry of an aging couple since "On Golden Pond". - @Sunday, June 29, 2014 3:49 PM

Just rented this movie. This movie is very slow and better suited for people growing older, LIKE ME, it's really dull in places but I love true stories. I can't give it two thumbs up but I think people who appreciate growing old might like it. It's NOT a bad movie, well done, good plot but kind of dull in places. Government regulations are to protect home buyers from unscrupulous builders who use substandard materials which do not hold up under severe circumstances, or sometimes even what is considered normal weather. He could have bought a trailer....and probably would have needed only a variance.. It's sad that he was trying to do the right thing. My Grandfather was they same type of man.
