Genres & Description

Comedy Drama Romance

7.3 / 10

Silent as a painting, the movie shows us day-dreamer Hermie and his friends Oscy and Benjie spending the summer of '42 on an US island with their parents - rather unaffected by WWII. While Oscy's main worries are the when and how of getting laid, Hermie honestly falls in love with the older Dorothy, who's married to an army pilot. When her husband returns to the front, Hermie shyly approaches her.

i've seen this twice: as a teenager, and later as an adult. at both times, i felt the story was not that good. i think the music was just better than the film itself - @Wednesday, August 19, 2015 5:49 PM

Make this today and there'd be outcry for jealous cold housewives demanding the Dorothy older woman be arrested. (Then again, we won't see this movie made today - there are no hobbits, dragon, storm-troppers or spidermen. Movies of the early 70's were made for adults - not children.)  - @Sunday, May 18, 2014 4:07 PM

I saw Summer of '42 in the summer of '71 when it came out. I was 17, and it completely haunted me. It still does, when I watch a clip or hear the theme song! Jennifer O'neill will forever have a special place in my heart, and I used to wish so badly that I could have been Hermie. Unbelievable movie! - @Saturday, April 5, 2014 11:38 PM

I'd heard the song with that name so many times but never knew it was from a movie. Seems like a really sweet film, I've definitely got to watch it. :) - @Thursday, January 9, 2014 4:56 AM

@KellyGreen5555 I don't agree with your comment that the voice over and trailer were terrible. You have to remember that this was done at a different era so back then, it sounded and looked a la mode. - @Thursday, February 10, 2011 5:04 PM

It reminds me of a very happy time in my own life (the early 70s). I was 15 when this was released and, although I didn't have an experience like Hermie's, I could easily put myself into his position. That is, being attracted to an older woman, while you're still pretty much too young to do anything about it. Jennifer O'Neill was an extraordinarily beautiful woman. - @Wednesday, December 29, 2010 3:08 AM

It was one of the funniest, one of the saddest movies I've ever seen. I am so lucky to have a copy of the book. The 1st time I saw it I was 18 (1971) & I loved how Raucher wrote about Dorothy.....thanks for posting this..... - @Thursday, September 30, 2010 3:04 AM
