In 1836, General Santa Anna and the Mexican Army is sweeping across Texas. To be able to stop him, General Sam Houston needs time to get his main force into shape. To buy that time he orders Colonel William Travis to defend a small mission on the Mexicans' route at all costs. Travis' small troop is swelled by groups accompanying Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett, but as the situation becomes ever more desperate Travis makes it clear there will be no shame if they leave while they can.

My favourite movie of all time. I don't like your comment Mr Landis - @Saturday, October 27, 2018 10:03 AM

It's wonderful that John Wayne was able to make the extension of slave territory into land stolen from Mexico such a fine, family film. - @Monday, September 24, 2018 6:17 PM

Okay - so Landis is REALLY an asshole. - @Wednesday, September 12, 2018 9:12 PM

I saw it when it came out. It was bad then... It has remained bad to this day. Future generations will look upon it and go..."What the fuk were they thinking!" - @Tuesday, July 31, 2018 8:20 PM

I love this movie. I was 8 when it came out. I've seen it a hundred times. - @Tuesday, July 3, 2018 2:47 AM

The movie is not great, but entertaining. Calling it bad goes too far for me. It has a good soundtrack, but many movies back then had a good soundtrack. - @Sunday, December 3, 2017 9:43 AM

the alamo wasnt a flop it made money but it took too long for wayne to recoup his investment to get out of hock he had to sell off his portion back to the studio.but it made a lot of money unlike the dull tedious remake which lost tens of millions and is one of the biggest disasters in film history. - @Friday, November 10, 2017 8:59 PM

i enjoyed the alamo when i first saw it in the 60s but when i saw the full version it was a different movie an absolute classic with various sub plots that add so much color to it dont judge until you see how it was meant to be. - @Friday, November 10, 2017 8:54 PM

One last comment: Mr. Landis says he doesn't know what the point was of Lawrence Harvey's "William Travis" breaking his sword in two and throwing it at the enemy when he's mortally wounded. This is more evidence that Landis is out of his league in criticizing "The Alamo": it has been for centuries -- and still is today, though less so -- for a commandeer who is defeated to present his sword to the victorious commander as a symbol of surrender. Travis broke his sword as a symbol of the defenders -- and himself as commander -- not surrendering, but dying to the last man. It was a symbol well known to those of us who have served our nation in its military. I guess we can't expect someone like Landis to know such things. - @Wednesday, November 30, 2016 2:03 AM

Landis is kind of a jerk: condescending toward anyone he labels "right-wing" or "conservative." His own far-left politics are well known and documented. Landis is completely unfit to judge a film like Wayne's "The Alamo." He's not totally wrong about some of the scenes: every scene with Linda Crystal should have been left out, along with most of the scenes prior to Crockett and his men entering the Alamo; and Frankie Avalon . . . terrible, just terrible. Cut about 1/3 out of the film and it would have been better. Even so, it's a very watchable movie, with outstanding battle scenes -- and, let's face it, the battles are what the historic event was all about. - @Wednesday, November 30, 2016 1:55 AM

It wasn't a great movie, but it had its moments, especially when Laurence Harvey broke his own sword rather than let it become a trophy for Santa Anna. - @Saturday, November 12, 2016 5:04 AM

After all the stuff that have been said about the movie, I was shocked at how good it was when I saw it for the first time last week. Landis is such a lefty snob, of course he's gonna crap on it. It's John Wayne. These guys all have daddy issues. - @Sunday, October 16, 2016 8:53 AM

I was always taken aback how the critics attacked with fervor this movie back in the TV guides back in the 1970s. Personally, I think it's one of the best films coming out of the early 1960s. - @Wednesday, September 28, 2016 11:06 PM

3:48 Even as a 10 year old kid, I knew Travis breaking his sword was a final act of defiance, as giving up one's sword to the enemy was the traditional ritual for surrender.  Not bothering to care about these and other details and just dismissing them as nonsense shows a pretty unpleasant snobbery tainting Mr. Landis' whole review.  As a filmmaker himself (and one with plenty of, shall I say, "misunderstood" films over the past couple of decades), I would think he would make more of an effort to be open-minded about this movie, as it is and has been well thought of by many, many people. - @Sunday, May 10, 2015 1:29 AM

Ok, now John Landis pissed me off.  He didn't have to put this movie down from beginning to end.  As I said even John Ford thought this movie was great.  Now with Landis's Beverly Hills Cop 3, it was all right but compared it to the original or part 2 , 3 sucked.  John Landis could had went to the John Wayne's death scene and went into detail of how Wayne overacted in it I would had probably enjoyed the narration but The Alamo was a good movie but so was the remake and I probably liked the remake better because it was more accurate. - @Tuesday, December 24, 2013 1:16 AM

Blues Brothers, a masterpiece.  Blues Brothers 2000 the biggest train wreck in history.  He couldn't even remake his own movies without embarrassing himself.  Granted today John Wayne's The Alamo is not very accurate but even John Ford himself gave this movie credit.  Says alot for that embarrassment called John Landis. - @Tuesday, December 24, 2013 1:04 AM

Scott Johanson
John Landis is an asshole now after watching him put down this movie.as "one of those train wrecks" like maybe fucking Beverly Hills Cop 3.  Maybe American Werewolf In Paris.  Hey I liked American Werewolf In London but something must be said that he doesn't direct movies anymore.  - @Tuesday, December 24, 2013 12:56 AM

The horsework was really good and the stunts were nice but Last Command was better as was Walt Diney's version in Davy Crocket. - @Wednesday, October 2, 2013 12:37 PM

You've lost your mind Mr, Landis. I have the restored version on LaserDisc and this is a good picture. Much better than the remake. STAY AWESOME! :) - @Wednesday, October 2, 2013 3:29 AM
