The director of Quest for Fire (1981) creates yet another film in nature with almost no human dialogue in this picturesque story of an orphaned bear cub who is adopted by an adult male bear and must avoid hunters. Bart the Bear stars in this anthropomorphic fantasy.

My mom had to take me to the Dr's and on the way back I learned this was my favorite movie when I was a tot (I was born in Feb 89, it apparently came out Oct 89 in the US). Apparently toddler 2 year old me sat and watched this movie, without moving. At all. Glued to the screen. So now i'm going to have to watch this movie because I have no memory of it but toddler me approved. lol - @Wednesday, November 21, 2018 11:07 PM

This was a sad and happy movie in its day Shows how dangerous it is for orphan cubs and how dangerous a grizzly can be. For those of you who love this film and animal. I own the big bay mare that was used in the campfire seen where the baby bear is seen swiping at her. The horse's name is Gypsy. She is an Ardenne. Gypsy has been with me since 2003and Ive known her since 2001. She has had a good long life. Gypsy was also in The Thirteenth Warrior. The scene is when the warriors sees a little boy running holding his ear. They gallop down to meet the child Gypsy comes dead center to the camera as she gallops down the hill with the guy on her back scarred. Just thought some people might wonder about the horses in the films I always think about the animals. If you know Gypsy from before the two films were made. I would love to meet you. Id like to find the people who bred this mare. Thanks - @Tuesday, August 14, 2018 2:32 AM

This is The best movie in the 1980's since little shop of horrors in my opinion. I saw a couple of clips from this movie on YouTube when I was 9 years old including the beginning & ending. Than I saw the full movie when I was 17 years old & it just became one of my favorite movies ever. The animal action is so well-done, the musical score by Philippe Sared is amazing, the cinematography is amazing as well, it's cute, inspiring, kind of funny at times, & it has a lot of heart & emotion. I'm gonna give the bear 5 out of 5 stars. - @Tuesday, April 4, 2017 12:34 AM

The Adventures of Milo & Otis: Fun and a bit sad. Benji the Hunted: A bit fun, but mostly scary and sad. The Bear: Depressingly sad. - @Thursday, September 1, 2016 12:47 AM

I'm glad there's a popular film that shows that hunting is wrong. In Ontario the government allowed a spring bear hunt, resulting in many orphaned bears -- just to get votes from hunters. It's wrong. Hunting should be banned. Men should let the wild animals live. They should find their entertainment some other way. - @Monday, June 22, 2015 6:02 AM

I saw this movie years ago and ADORED it. Of course, I love just about all furry mammals. Bart the Bear was one awesome bear (he played the adult grizzly). Raised and trained by Doug Seus in Utah (I think), he was over 9 feet tall and had not missed too many meals ..... 1700 lbs. Documentaries involving Brad Pitt showed how Bart used to play with Doug. They loved each other. - @Wednesday, August 28, 2013 11:32 PM

I remember when this came out in the 80s, it was like that season's "March of the Penguins". Bart the Bear who played the big bear was great. He popped up in "Legends of the Fall" a few years later and killed Brad Pitt at the end. That was about the last movie I could stand to watch Brad Pitt in. - @Tuesday, February 21, 2012 4:18 AM
