Another planet, another time. 1000 years ago the mysterious Dark Crystal was damaged by one of the Urskeks and an age of chaos has began! The evil race of grotesque birdlike lizards the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. Meanwhile the orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of the peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal which gives the Skesis their power and restore the balance of the universe.

Vergleichbar ist DER DUNKLE KRiSTALL mit dem Fantasy-Fim DiE UNENDLiCHE GESCHiCHTE aus dem Jahre 1984, der mit ebenfalls viel Phantasie und Liebe zum Detail erschaffen wurde. Diese mit viel Liebe zum Detail erschaffene Fantasy-Welt und Landschaften, mit deren unzähligen Fantasy-Figuren ist mit das Schönste, was ich jemals in einem phantastischen Film gesehen habe... Dieser Film mit den wundervollen Bildern verzaubert mich so sehr, daß ich davon träumen kann... Traumhaft schön... und unendlich phantastisch... Jen, aus dem Stamm der Gelflinge, wird ausgesandt, um einen Kristallsplitter zu finden, um den Dunklen Kristall zu heilen, der ihre wundersame Welt retten kann. In dieser Welt leben auch die Uruhs (Mystics), die das Gute verkörpern, und die Skekse, die das Böse bezeichnen. Auf seinem Weg zum Kristall-Schloss begegnet er Kira, einem Gelfling-Mädchen, die ihm bei seinem schweren Abenteuer beisteht. Die Skekse, die das Volk der Gelflinge ausgerottet haben, setzen alles daran, um den Gelfling daran zu hindern, ans Ziel zu gelangen. Erst gegen Ende erfahren alle, daß beide Völker zu einem Ganzen gehören, daß sie alle ein Teil voneinander sind. this movie is really dark and creepy. It always leaves me melancholic. There are some scenes which are really frightening and gave me serious nightmares as a child. For instance the emperor-skesis death. The dissolution of his face and body is very explicit and creepy. All garthim scenes are also very dark. They come, kill or imprison everybody and leave destruction and fire. Then the life elixir draw. I think the scene with the podling is even more depressing than Kira's. His Face and eyes are destroyed, and you can really feel, that all pleasure and joy of life is ripped out of him. Last but not least: The music. Not the most diversified composition ever made, but the main melody is very powerful and illustrates in its lydian scale the falseness of the crystal - quite similar to the ring theme of the lord of the rings. Nonetheless the movie has a depth and fascination to it, that is hard to grasp. It takes its time, not like the fast paced stuff of today. Though it doesn't show you very much of its world, it makes you feel, that there is an epic background of what happend in all the thousand years described. Then the connection of the Mystics and the Skesis. Very mythical. Dark, depressing, but fascinating nonetheless. Well, so much for my thoughts about this movie.
