Action Biography Drama History Romance

5.9 / 10

An enigmatic young woman in conflict - torn between reason and passion; between her woman's body and being raised as a prince; between the ancient and modern worlds and between the brilliance of her educated mind and the conservative forces around her. Crowned Queen at the age of six, Kristina of Sweden was thrust into a labyrinth of power and tradition, where a court of austere, Lutheran men pressure her to marry and produce an heir to fulfill her destiny. She finds sanctuary and love with her lady-in-waiting, the beautiful and elegant, countess Ebba Sparre, although the Chancellor, Axel Oxenstierna, pressures her to pair with his son, Johan. Soon the forces around the Queen realize that Ebba is the key to controlling her, but they underestimate Kristina's brilliant mind and her drive to be free.

If anything, time has proven many times over that homosexuality has everything to do with your environment and upbringing and nothing to do with your biology. When the second prince or male heir in line are raised to emulate woman so that they're not a threat to their brother, they grow up to be effeminate. When a girl is raised to be a boy, the same, not that it always turns out that way. There are many environmental factors that are common, even if separate from each case. But biology is biology. We are even taught this in higher education, psychology. So I find it very illogical when homosexual people want to fight for their right to choose a gender and force doctors or would be doctors to treat them as their preference. That's just a malpractice suit waiting to happen. Once they change their sex, they should still need to checkmark the little box of the sex of their birth for doctors to treat them accordingly. Men and women are psychologically, chemically, hormonally different. There are certain medical issues that women have and certain medical issues that men have. What some homosexuals want to have is anonymity so that once they change their sex, any potential spouse or friend need not know that they were in fact born a different sex. - @Thursday, November 1, 2018 2:20 PM

I think Kristina of Sweden needs a very long drama to chronicle her unique & complex character, a single movie may be a failure. Great cast, but please: movie dialogue in Swedish! - @Sunday, July 16, 2017 7:29 AM

It's cute how in these lesbian flicks all the lesbians are Lipstick Lesbians, when IRL Kristina was not that attractive. The only ones that say she was a lesbian are feminist 'scholars' and Louis Crompton. Aside from that, it seems to be the usual cliche of repressed lesbians fighting back against their conservative foes. Nevermind the fact that Kristina converted to Catholicism - which was *so* homophobic - and was buried in Rome. You can read as much pro-gay literature that asserts she was accepted as much as you like, but you also can't argue that an allegedly homophobic and hateful institution would allow a known lesbian to be buried on its premises. Like Queen Elizabeth of England, though she died a virgin she must automatically be a lesbian. I already know where this is going. - @Saturday, September 24, 2016 1:30 AM

The producers didn't take in consideration that Christina was far from attractive. She had a deformed chest, a bent back and uneven shoulders. She was often described as obese (but back then, it was not a negative attribute). She had no pride in her looks: hair was always messy and at one point, she totally shaved her head and wore man's wig. She was not a pretty sight at all, unlike what is presented in the movie... - @Wednesday, August 24, 2016 6:26 AM

wonderfully directed, great casting - everyone did a good job filling their roles. i am clueless as to how historically accurate this movie, though but that didn't stop me from enjoying the film. i think the _'king'_ is perfectly cast. i liked her social awkwardness, i found it really endearing. anyway, the movie is of course filled with angst, what lesbian movie isn't? nonetheless it was still an entertaining watch. i'd give it a 4/5. a friendly reminder, this was set in the 17th century, so don't expect a happy ending. we barely even get a happy ending with movies set in the 20th/21st century, so...... it *doesn't* have a tragic ending *_BUT_* not a happy ending either. it simply had _'the end'_. lol - @Saturday, January 23, 2016 11:36 AM
