Children especially those of immigrants and/or Jews (who want to belong) were and are perceived as `property`.  I find it funny when writers and critics go on about Hoffman`s `ethnic` looks and that the producers considered him odd and/or ugly and not right for the role in `The Graduate`.  If you can access an early high school photo of Dustin Hoffman I suggest you have a look.  THIS is a plain Los Angeles guy.  The Hoffman who auditioned for Mike Nichols had already sorted out his persona which by comparison was very, very flash. - @Tuesday, August 19, 2014 11:25 AM

Interesting point and one I would not automatically pick up.  True the world had more money after the Holocaust.  Was it Jew money?  Were and are we living on Jew money?  Many Jews have never received back  confiscated property and/or material goods and this supposedly amounts to trillions. - @Tuesday, August 19, 2014 11:23 AM

Hearing Dustin Hoffman speak, blows the lid off the late 'hippy/swinging' sixties. I thought that, yes, there was materialism in the sixties, but all of a sudden, in that closing decade, it had somehow become less as people were then beginning to question ideals and values once thought of as desireable and inspirational. And I thought that this new thinking went across the generations. I don't know why I had this skewed stupid vision. Time to take off the rose coloured glasses, huh? - @Saturday, November 30, 2013 2:18 PM

He's right. Too many children in this affluent society are merely expensive pets. Think of Bruce Jenner's two kids from that reality show. - @Monday, December 26, 2011 7:45 PM
