7.3 / 10

The family of talented cook, Hassan Kadam, has a life filled with both culinary delights and profound loss. Drifting through Europe after fleeing political violence in India that killed the family restaurant business and their mother, the Kadams arrive in France. Once there, a chance auto accident and the kindness of a young woman, Marguerite, in the village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val inspires Papa Kadam to set up a Indian restaurant there. Unfortunately, this puts the Kadams in direct competition with the snobbish Madame Mallory's acclaimed haute cuisine establishment across the street where Marguerite also works as a sous-chef. The resulting rivalry eventually escalates in personal intensity until it goes too far. In response, there is a bridging of sides initiated by Hassan, Marguerite and Madame Mallory herself, both professional and personal, that encourages an understanding that will change both sides forever.

What a beautifully colourful film centered not only on a self-taught Indian chef trying to ensconce himself in the South of France, but cleverly underlines the value of family, good food, cultural harmony and understanding who you are. This isn't your cliched predominately romance film or action one with violence and superheroes. The Hundred-Foot Journey is a wonderfully crafted story and a refreshing watch. Excellent actors, mouthwatering foods, authentic humour, and beautiful shots of France. One of my favourite films this year. - @Saturday, November 14, 2015 7:35 AM

I treated myself to a DVD Player on Tuesday 12th. May 2015 & "100 Foot Journey" was the very first Movie I watched. Before retirement I worked for decades in the Food Industry travelling the world for Companies like J. Sainsbury & Northern Foods. The furthest I travelled was to Uruguay, where I was served their National Culinary Speciality "Plaited Lamb's Intestines" & I had been firmly told NOT to criticise the food under any circumstances. This was not difficult, as I was so busy chewing this gastronomic delight, that I couldn't speak! I much appreciated this film with its many & varied evocative scenes, fine culinary experiences, wonderful acting & good humour. I find it sad to read so many racist comments on this site & wished the guilty parties had been chewing Uruguayan "Plaited Lamb's Intestines" to keep them quiet! - @Wednesday, May 13, 2015 9:03 AM

I watched this movie last night. It made me hungry.  One of the best movies in 2014 and thank god there is no violence, explicit sex scenes or foul words for the first time. Very entertaining but those Indians are much better behaved than the Indians in real life. - @Sunday, January 25, 2015 4:25 PM

Not that good. Very predictable. Looked like the typical Bollywood movie, where in the middle of the movie the whole cast starts to dance without no reason. And also I hate when they speak english with french accent and that supposed to be french language. It sounds to me like ''Alo, alo''. Either speak real french or use english (or american english) with english (american) accent. - @Tuesday, December 9, 2014 8:58 PM

Mirren a Française? Nah. A young French woman pulls an entire Indian family off the street and within minutes whips up 5* snacks in her home? Nah. So, so NOT French. The whole thing's way too far fetched. I've watched a lot of Indian movies and French and English and I've been to France many, many times, even lived there, but this movie is one of the biggest disappointments ever. - @Saturday, December 6, 2014 8:03 PM

'maybe two hundred years is long enough' indeed it is. one if the things that makes some of us to stay behind our peers is that our 'stick with tradition thingy' sometimes we gotta let go and accept the norms of modern society. after all, everything is in a change or flux, nothing steadfastly is. - @Monday, November 17, 2014 11:04 AM

wtf! im getting sick of all these movies with same stupid story lines of some indian / indian family coming to west and having the secret to baseball, computer and now making food. it's all because the movie industry has just realized these ppl make 1/6th of world population so its a good market for selling their crap movie. - @Thursday, November 13, 2014 9:42 PM

Loved this movie, saw it last night (missed the first 10 minutes, unfortunately). Good screenplay, acting, scenery, soundtrack--plus I love food. Any movie that is about food (in a way) is okay by me! The only flaw that I noticed was that when Hasan had his hands badly burned, they seemed just dandy after the bandages were taken off--no scars, nothing. Other than that, I thought the film was wonderful. - @Sunday, November 2, 2014 3:17 PM

We watched the movie last night, and what can I say. It is superb in every aspect conceivable: great cast, magnificent setting (in my homeland of Southern France :-)), beautiful story, heart-warmingly told. The film has no but one little drop of bitterness to it: Whatever surgeon tampered with Helen Mirrens expressive face should be sued. I cannot understand what brings an actress this renowned and established in the business (she even won an Oscar for her stunning acting in "The Queen"!) to have her face - which is her professional capital! - literally defaced so disgracefully. She is not herself anymore. What a pity! Anyway, this sure is one of my all-time favorite movies, alongside "Chocolat" and "The Intouchables". Thumbs up! Go and watch it! - @Sunday, November 2, 2014 12:21 PM

Wasted 2 hours of my life watching this load of malarky... first off, Helen Mirrin plays a French restaurant owner who has for the past 30 years been attempting to get a 2nd Michelin star for her restaurant and has gone through a slew of cooks in her attempt. Maybe it wasn't the cooks, but her being stubborn in "keeping French tradition" and not varying her menu. 30 years and no new stars attained should be the wake up call that she needed to switch it up. Second, she hires this Indian chef (who floors her with an omelet) with his assortment of classical Indian spices who somehow managed to turn the French culinary world on it's head by adding cumin and other Indian spices to dishes. They are so amazed, so in awe of him, that he quickly attains 3 stars at the most posh restaurants that Paris has to offer along with all the fame, wealth and babes that go with it. As if the French, with their long gastronomic history, had never ever heard of, or used, Indian spices in their food. Third, food porn abound with long and richly colored shots of food as it's being cooked and served. Naturally, as the credits rolled at the end of this crap, it was co-produced by Oprah Winfrey. - @Wednesday, October 22, 2014 1:03 AM
