In the 1850s, Ellen Ternan is a minimally talented actress who catches the eye of the hailed British author, Charles Dickens. Bored with his intellectually unstimulating wife, Dickens takes the educated Ellen as his mistress with the cooperation of her mother. What follows is a stormy relationship with this literary giant who provides her with a life few women of her time can enjoy. Yet, Ellen is equally revolted by Charles' emotional cruelty and determination to keep her secret. In that conflict, Ellen must judge her own role in her life and decide if the price she pays is bearable.

I used to like Dickens. He's my favorite author. But his last name speak for him, he's a Dick. His Dick is powerful than his brain. I hate him now that I saw this. - @Thursday, September 13, 2018 12:36 PM

Stop the glorification of infidelity!!! because of this kind of sick propaganda film, our social culture always gives room for men to do as they please. while women are required to always be super-perfect; forever young; eternal beauty without wrinkles; calm understanding or just be the selfless clueless "admirer", in order to be happy or just maintain their marriage. I am not even a feminist, but this kind of movie truly boil my blood 👿 - @Tuesday, May 29, 2018 4:00 AM

Well, it looks like Ralph Fiennes is in yet another film glorifying adultery and infidelity. Hopefully this will be more interesting than "The English Patient"! Dickens is my favorite author of all time, but he treated his wife Catherine shamefully, abandoning her for Ellen Ternan. Not the most glorious moment of his life! But, after all no one is perfect! - @Friday, June 30, 2017 1:06 PM

What need to be understood is that originally Dicken's wife played around with his feelings a lot. He had his doubts about their marriage since before the marriage itself. They were both pretty miserable together, though he did love her once... It is merely that he loved her before she loved him, if she ever did love him, and if she did love him, then at least, it was way too late. - @Saturday, May 20, 2017 7:34 PM

Sadly men are incapable of eternal love and will fall out of love eventually (usually falling&leaving for younger girls), while women tend and dream to love and be loved forever - I have seen that so many times in this world. There were times when there was platonic love between people: loving and admiring each other from far, but never crossing that line. That is called morals: norms and values. Indeed it is not a crime to fall in love. However, cheating and dumping your devoted wife is immoral and a crime of immorality because you BREAK the sacrament of marriage and your PROMISE: ‘’to love&cherish until death do us apart’’. We must remember that behind every great man there is a great woman: loving, caring&devoted wife+ friend who doesn’t deserve to be used, cheated, betrayed and abandoned when she is not needed anymore which is truly unfair. I don’t care for this movie, but wish there was one made about those wives that sacrifice their lives for their husbands&families but never really appreciated for all their sacrifice instead being taken for granted.  Nowadays we do have a choice to marry or not to marry (or divorce), but if you DO marry then please don’t desecrate the sacrament of marriage if you incapable to keep your promise. - @Tuesday, January 31, 2017 4:41 AM

How sad. Despite of many comments here I'd say that the name of the movie to my mind is tremendously correct. She is the loving, suffering and in the shadow of her famous partner. It is a very sad situaion always and if you think of it- nowadays people can get divorced- at that time the couldn't. Falling in love is not a crime, it's something you no way can control. Have some compassion, don't act like a jelous angry fool. I had compassion for those who fell in love wih my partner and could face the fact that no love can be eternal. Loving someone is wishing happiness for him. Jelousy is something when you can't bear the fact that the one whom you love can be happy...without you. - @Friday, October 21, 2016 5:36 PM
