Daniel and his mother move from New Jersey to California. She has a wonderful new job, but Daniel quickly discovers that a dark haired Italian boy with a Jersey accent doesn't fit into the blond surfer crowd. Daniel manages to talk his way out of some fights, but he is finally cornered by several who belong to the same karate school. As Daniel is passing out from the beating he sees Miyagi, the elderly gardener leaps into the fray and save him by outfighting half a dozen teenagers. Miyagi and Daniel soon find out the real motivator behind the boys' violent attitude in the form of their karate teacher. Miyagi promises to teach Daniel karate and arranges a fight at the all-valley tournament some months off. When his training begins, Daniel doesn't understand what he is being shown. Miyagi seems more interested in having Daniel paint fences and wax cars than teaching him Karate.

This was one of those movies that was so good you never forget things about it, this trailer being one. I saw the movie in the theaters back then as a 12 year old at the Roslyn movie theater on Long Island with my mother, step father(both are now deceased) and my 4 year old brother. You couldn't easily find movies with a character like Daniel. He's this kind of sensitive, romantic guy, but has a lot of fight in him. Usually if a movie character is a fighter, he's not sensitive and is quite tough when it comes to emotions. Or when a movie character is quite sensitive in feelings, he doesn't have a fight in him. That's why this movie is so inspiring, because a guy's being sensitive and being brave in fighting is combined in a character. I think Karate Kid would have been a great franchise if Elisabeth Shue had accepted to participate in the sequel. Most of the fans were disappointed when she simply vanished, because the Karate Kid brand and niche fan base were conquered by the story of a struggled mother and son, that moved from NJ to California, the boy did not adapt to the new reality but found on Shue a point of support and later on Morita a point of reference and guidance. I don't know why Shue did not accept to participate in the Karate Kid II (and maybe III) the excuse of "going back to Harvard" is difficult to understand since later on she took Back to the Future II. I think that the Producer, Director and Manager should had re-approached the situation and had the vision that Karate Kid could have been a landmark for the 80's, explaining to Shue that she could be one of the most famous actress at that time. Karate Kid left at the end an open door for the sequel and some people believe that Karate Kid II was a success worldwide because the audience was interested in the continuation of the 3 "Ralph, Elisabeth and Pat", it did not happen. Karate Kid III did not finish the franchise well. I think Hollywood writes/producers got disconnected and missed a big chance with Karate Kid. An example was the decision of Harrison Ford to not take part on the Return of Jedi as he thought that Han Solo had an end and he was not interested in coming back, well George Lucas gave him an explanation that yet despite the end of Solo in the Empire Strikes Back, the audience worldwide was expecting that the 3 of them in the next movie.
