The protagonist of this story is a woman who is going through an emotional and mental crisis and is slowly losing touch with reality and propriety. The whole time I kept wondering why she went through those extreme lengths to encourage the development of the child's natural talent. She's a teacher at that school and he is in kindergarten. He will likely be in that school through 5th grade. She could just encourage him year by year as a teacher in that school to keep developing his poetry, letting his future teachers know to focus on his creative writing. Instead of taking him to a nighttime poetry slam in Manhattan she could have had him read his poems at future school recitals in the auditorium for an audience of parents. The boy is only 5. There is plenty of time for him to develop his talent in the school setting. He doesn't have terminal pancreatic cancer. He'll live a long time.
