Well, I often think about the film's chronology, get a headache and give up. It is the sort of puzzle you find in college admission tests like the LSAT. Unfortunately I did not do very well with such exams. It seems that Sandra, a new MD, starts corresponding with a man, an architect, who is run over by a truck shortly after she comes to work at a hospital in Chicago. She leaves letters in his mailbox, and I suppose that he lives at the Lake House but is not home when she goes to the Lake House. That seems rather suspicious, because if she just waited until evening, he should normally have come home after work. Or he should have a cell phone, so she can call him up. Or a phone at work. She is able to correspond with him for up to 2 years, because the letters she puts in the mailbox at the Lake House appear in the box 2 years before she puts them in the box. One might think that a letter would have to still be there when she opens the box to put it in, since it is going back in time, but I suppose it immediately disappears into a time tunnel and comes out 2 years earlier. And he reads her letters and answers them. His letters arrive in the same mailbox 2 years after he writes them and puts them in the mailbox. So she was corresponding with someone no longer alive in her time but alive 2 years before she wrote her letters. She finds out about his death only a few hours before he is going to go to Daly Plaza to meet her in his time, which is the time when he is run over and she runs to save the unknown victim. Realizing what has happened she hurries back to the Lake House and mails a note begging him not to go to Daly Plaza to meet her as arranged, 2 years earlier, but instead to come to the Lake House 2 years later, which is to say just after she sends the note. He gets the letter and does not go to Daly Plaza, but a few minutes after she inserts the letter, he walks out of the trees by the house to meet her for the first time. He had done what she asked and thus was not run over. This means that everything associated with his death had to be undone, such as death certificates, funeral, obituaries, references in the Internet, grieving by relatives, etc. So the intervening history has to be magically rewritten. That is about all I can make out, and I am not sure I got it right or not. I wondered why he said no one had lived in the house for years before him, and she said he had moved in after she moved out. But the dog knew the name Jack, which she had given him, and answered t0 that name. So she must have lived there before the architect penpal. Or was the dog a magic dog that telepathically communicated its name to new residents of the house? Like a witch's familiar? And at what point was he able to put the Jane Austen book in the apartment she moved into, which was not yet built when he first went there. And why not add a note to explain things in the book, and did he tell her to look for it? Or when they were dancing, he recognized her, but she did not know who he was. He could have sort of gradually revealed his identity to her so that it would not shock her. Or had she not yet begun writing to him? Well, I suppose it does not matter, but it puzzles me. I did enjoy the movie a lot on an intuitive level. It was more interesting than when she was Lucy and rescued a stranger from a train, but not as funny, since it is about death essentially. I suppose that she may have gotten a second chance, perhaps that is the key point, but we seldom get second chances in real life. There is another film, Shall We Dance, which has a Japanese original that I prefer to the American version. Perhaps I should watch the Korean version to get some clues.
