In the early 1970s Nicholas Garrigan, a young semi-idealistic Scottish doctor, comes to Uganda to assist in a rural hospital. Once there he soon meets up with the new President, Idi Amin, who promises a golden age for the African nation. Garrigan hits it off immediately with the rabid Scotland fan, who soon offers him a senior position in the national health department and becomes one of Amin's closest advisers. However as the years pass, Garrigan cannot help but notice Amin's increasingly erratic behavior that grows beyond a legitimate fear of assassination into a murderous insanity that is driving Uganda into bloody ruin. Realizing his dire situation with the lunatic leader unwilling to let him go home, Garrigan must make some crucial decisions that could mean his death if the despot finds out.

This movie is a perfect example (though I'm not sure if I am talking about real life here), about how a guy can come off as being friendly, act nice, funny and charismatic, and then turn around and kill people. There is a huge difference between someone who is nice and someone who is kind. If someone is nice its basically how the norm is, meaning that its supposed to be how you act in public settings. Its the human condition, nice people are everywhere and it can be used as a way to deceive people too. Whereas if you are genuinely kind, you do things for people without a thought about being rewarded and because its in your nature to do the right thing. Being nice doesn't mean you are a good person, in fact there was this one thing I read about Hitler's friends saying, "He was such a nice and friendly guy." Yes many dictators and world leaders can camouflage their brutality by acting nice to people, a lot of them don't need to act brutal right away to get their people behind them. They will usually start out gaining followers by acting nice, charismatic and come off as likeable and smooth. They usually turn brutal when they are up against their enemies, if people don't do as they say, or they get so paranoid that they turn on you, even when you didn't do anything wrong. The moral of this story is that you shouldn't trust just anyone who acts nice. Yes being nice is a great way to meet new people and even make friends, but there are people out there who will act nice and then turn on people. We're not just talking about dictators and world leaders, we are talking about sociopaths, yes even psychopaths too can have moments of being nice. Players and womanizers act nice to get women into bed with them, they make them feel comfortable enough to end up sleeping with them. You think they say tactlessly that they wanna sleep with them? No, they are smooth talkers, they are seductive and they end up acting nice and women either fall for them, or just sleep with them anyways without the thought of living happily ever after. Some misguided men out there are under the impression that if you act nice to a woman, that you can make her attracted to you and either have sex with you or fall in love with you. Its human nature to use friendliness to get what you want, this is an extreme example, but I think people need to watch this movie and realize that not all people that act nice and friendly are actually kind people.
