Fifty years ago there were close to half-a-million lions in Africa. Today there are around 20,000. To make matters worse, lions, unlike elephants, which are far more numerous, have virtually no protection under government mandate or through international accords. This is the jumping-off point for a disturbing, well-researched and beautifully made cri de coeur from husband and wife team Dereck and Beverly Joubert, award-winning filmmakers from Botswana who have been Explorers-in-Residence at National Geographic for more than four years. Pointing to poaching as a primary threat while noting the lion's pride of place on the list for eco-tourists-an industry that brings in 200 billion dollars per year worldwide-the Jouberts build a solid case for both the moral duty we have to protect lions (as well as other threatened "big cats," tigers among them) and the economic sense such protection would make. And when one takes into account the fact that big cats are at the very top of the food ...

i hate these modern nature documentaries. stupid music, stupid fake stories, replaying footage from old documentaries etc. it's not a hollywood movie. just film and narrate. it's nature. - @Thursday, November 16, 2017 11:19 PM

The Last Lions was a very well developed documentary. Early on fighting/battle scenes grab the attention of the audience. The documentary even begins to play towards our emotions when the father dies, leaving a single mother alone to lead 3 baby cubs. Throughout this film we get a better understanding of how lions interact and behave in their everyday lifestyles. We gain this understanding as a result of such high quality, actual footage of the lions. The real live footage is very beautiful and intriguing. We begin to see the natural beauty lions bring to this world and we gain a more sympathetic view on why saving these beautiful creatures is so important. A few more statistics could have enhanced the credibility a bit but overall the documentary was very cool and well developed. - @Monday, December 5, 2016 3:43 AM

The Last Lions was an extremely intriguing documentary on the survival of lions in the wild. The documentary immediately grasp the attention with brawls between lions over territory and it immediately draws in emotions as a single mother is left to raise three cubs. The film also shows the system of checks and balances contained within nature. The lioness must fight at all cost to get food for her cubs and must also fight for safe territory. But, when it truly comes down to it she must make peace in order to attack and kill prey. The shots used by the cinematographers to progress through this lioness’ life were extremely well chosen and the quality of these shots were incredible. These shots truly help the viewers realize that these lions are beautiful creatures that need to be preserved, which is the producer's main goal. - @Tuesday, November 29, 2016 4:17 AM

Watching this now - of COURSE Scar (Jeremy Irons) has to narrate this movie. Documentaries like these need to be spread all-over, and invested more in. I wish governments/people with power cared more about the environment and endangered species.. - @Wednesday, May 13, 2015 11:03 PM

This is as far as I am concerned one of the most powerful wild documentary I have ever seen, I love it and I watched it many many times. Never get bored. As for the mother lion leaving her cub behind there was no other choice and she knows it. - @Saturday, October 25, 2014 5:23 PM

Yeah I agree, I would have taken him out myself. Sometimes that's all you can do and you just gotta be quick about it. Hopefully the little cubs pain wasn't exploited just to add more of a dramatic effect to the movie. I'm sure they have some set of rules or protocol they had to follow or something. Maybe it was movie magic and his suffering didn't really last that long. - @Monday, August 5, 2013 4:11 AM

a mercy death could have been 1000 times better than just leave him there to be killed. - @Monday, August 5, 2013 1:30 AM

that's how it works, they can never interact with the wildlife, I seriously doubt they could have done more than a mercy killing anyway, and the idea of a full grown lion with wheels for back legs inside a zoo or small enclosure seems even sadder to me, really sad moment in the film but a lions life isn't easy - @Sunday, August 4, 2013 5:27 PM

When i saw the first minutes of the documentary i was all up to donate, then i discovered that the filmmakers didnt help the injured the cub. no even euthanaise, they just left him there to die painfully and slowly. - @Sunday, August 4, 2013 10:47 AM

BTW Kevin... how about the only time a female seems epic is when THEY'RE a lion???? They're, there, their - know the difference. And sometimes even a female knows that!!! - @Thursday, May 2, 2013 7:37 PM

Well, we humans (the most destructive species EVER on and to this earth) are pretty much wiping out the wildlife, forests, you name it - for profit, or more room for us. Yes, you have a point - lions (and many other wild animals in Asia and other areas - including the oceans - are endangered. This film is focused upon the African lions specifically - there are many other animals who would qualify for such a focus. Just learn the lesson, please! - @Thursday, May 2, 2013 7:33 PM

You're right - I should have realized that this wasn't actually the 1994 animated Disney movie "The Lion King." Teach me your powers of observation so that I may stop being such an idiot! - @Monday, April 1, 2013 3:37 AM

You're an idiot. This documentary has NOTHING to do with Jeremy Irons, except the fact that he narrated it. This is about a lioness and how far she will go for her cubs. Watch it and learn, kid. - @Monday, April 1, 2013 1:18 AM

Saw this film on DVD.It was so poignant, I don't think I can watch it again.I cried like a fool.Ma di Tau was so brave after losing all her family(seemed at the time).Hope last cub did survive after filming. Only one thing is going to seriously help lions, tigers, or any other endangered species; when humans volunteer to limit population to only one child, or none, per couple. As long as we keep increasing by the billions, their fate is extinction in the wild. Soon there will be no wild left. - @Tuesday, March 5, 2013 6:21 PM

Azurewayv
Where did you hear that? From what I've read, the film crew abandoned the crippled cub to its fate, namely, death by a predator, which really angered me that the cub wasn't rescued and at least put to sleep if nothing could be done for her, which it looked like was the situation. Hope your version is right. - @Tuesday, March 5, 2013 6:10 PM

I'm not trying to sound rude but.. Why is all the attention on Africa? Why the African lions? I love them too, and I loved this film/ documentary, but why not Asian lions, which are truly endangered? - @Thursday, February 21, 2013 3:33 PM
