It was pretty dreadful actually. Apart from Bill Nighy the performances were bad. That Douglas Booth was totally miscast as Dan Leno didn't help matters and Olivia Cooke was unable to suggest any depth of character so that when the twist came it wasn't very believable but by that point I had lost interest and was pretty much ready for her to be hung as much as symbolic justice for her rotten performance. If you want a clunky feminist tale where the good guys are cross-dressers and wimmin, the investigating police are gay and have such amazingly progressive views for 1880 that they must have made Oscar Wilde look like a Calvinist missionary, and the villain is Heterosexual Man then this is for you. This is a typical Peter Ackroyd vehicle. London is a sort of metaphor for a state of being. The characters play out their parts by rote almost as if enacting a drama. The drama is always the same but it's London that gives and it's London that takes away. I think that this will probably be a good stage play and probably will transfer at some time. In his previous novels Hawksmoor and the death of Chatterton it was London that Ackroyd focused on. Great film great acting by Bill Nighy and Olivia Cooke. I suspect that Bill Nighy played this role which is out of character for him because it was written by Ackroyd. - @Monday, September 4, 2017 12:10 AM

Looks great, and I love Bill Nighy, He doesn't get nearly enough recognition. I hope this will change that. I'm kinda fed up with superheroes (despite being a great comic book fan) and huge blockbusters. Let's get a good, old fashioned murder mystery in gas-lit London.
