Action Crime Drama Mystery Thriller War

7.3 / 10

In 1942 Warsaw, a Polish prostitute is murdered in a sadistic way. Major Grau, an agent from German Intelligence who believes in justice, is in charge of the investigation. An eyewitness saw a German general leaving the building after a scream of the victim. A further investigation shows that three generals do not have any alibi for that night: General Tanz, Maj. Gen. Klus Kahlenberge and General von Seidlitz-Gabler. The three avoid direct contact with Major Grau and become potential suspects. As Major Grau gets close to them, he is promoted and sent to Paris. In 1944 Paris, this quartet is reunited and Major Grau continues his investigation. Meanwhile, a plan for killing Hitler is plotted by his high command; a romance between Ulrike von Seydlitz-Gabler and Lance Cpl. Kurt Hartmann is happening and Insp. Morand is helping Major Grau in his investigation. The story ends in 1965, in Hamburg, with another, similar crime.

One of the greatest performances in cinema history. How Peter O'Toole did not win the best actor Oscar for this I will never know! - @Sunday, October 21, 2018 8:00 AM

With two Ernst Stavro Blofeld's--Donald Pleasance and Charles Gray--it's gotta be good! As other have noted, this film is largely forgotten despite boating an impressive cast. Maybe because it's an internal Nazi investigation with no Allies parachuting in with choppers barking? More of a detective drama than a "war movie." I'm looking forward to seeing it. - @Tuesday, June 19, 2018 6:05 PM

A decent film that was hopelessly miscast. Omar Sharif as a German??? Gordon Jackson and John Gregson are bloody Scottish. Peter O Toole is Irish and Charles Grey is as English as you can get. This is the worst piece of casting since John Wayne played Ghengis Khan! - @Monday, February 16, 2015 4:47 PM

Thanks so much: a friend just shared that when he went to a family funeral it was like a scene from this film: now intrigued, especially by that reference & this star-studded cast, I'll look for it. - @Wednesday, September 3, 2014 6:21 PM

You really have to wonder what's going on and who the idiots are that run You Tube. I put in a serarch for "The Night of the Generals Part 1" and I end up getting every fucking thing under the sun EXCEPT The Night of the Generals Part 1! This is yet another example of the utter contempt that Google or You Tube and even Yahoo have for users. This medium has been completely taken over by greedy cocksuckers who spit in you face with that lack of quality and organization that is You Tube. - @Sunday, November 11, 2012 2:51 AM

Another serious fault, actor Christoper Plummer portraying Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Plummer went into his pocket, took out a gold cigarette case, took out a cigarette, put in his lips and lit it. REALITY: The real Erwin Rommel DIDN'T SMOKE. He neither drank nor smoked. It was very well noted by people close to Rommel, men who served under him and others. How could the producers of this movie missed this. - @Sunday, July 15, 2012 4:06 PM

Sweet, I'm torrenting the movie now. I've read the book a few times, such a good portrayal of these slippery so-and-sos who pretend they're full of honour but say whatever the winning side wants to hear. - @Saturday, November 19, 2011 3:45 AM

I can't believe the lauditory comments this uninspired drek is receiving here. Sanity must prevail. The production is lavish. The cast is stellar. O'Toole is excellent at catatonia. There is no plot of any value, no mystery, no intrigue, no puzzle to solve. You will only keep watching to see whether your initial reaction to this (that it's crap) is actually correct. It is!!!! - @Friday, September 17, 2010 7:04 PM

I bought this film for £2.50 only because I thought it was going to be a laughable b-movie. I actually enjoyed every minute of this film, I cannot see why it is not mentioned or praised more often, I'd never heard of it before seeing it in the shop but I am very glad I bought it. - @Friday, May 30, 2008 2:23 PM
