In the summer of 1935, 12-year-old twins Niles and Holland Perry live with their family on a Connecticut farm. Their loving grandmother Ada has taught them something called "the game." A number of accidents begin happening, and it seems to Niles that Holland is responsible. It is Ada who begins to see the truth, and she is the only one who can stop this macabre game of murder.

Saw this as a teenager. Definitely creeped me out. Can't believe parents let their nine year olds see it. Also surprised, after looking it up again, that it actually came out (1972) before the Exorcist and The Omen. Saw them each as they came out on the big screen, including Rosemary's Baby. . I saw this movie shortly after it came out in the '70's before I had even started school. It scared me like no other "scary" movie that I saw as a child and it really had an effect on me. Even when I rewatch it now I can remember the first time I watched it as a child and it brings back many memories from that night. "The game" that the grandmother, Ada, teaches her grandson Niles, had a profound effect on me most of my life for some reason. I read the book as a teenager and even though there were some minor differences, it was a very good read. The author, Thomas Tryon, wrote a few other books as well. "Harvest Home", is also a rather creepy book and was well worth reading. A made for television adaption of it called "The Dark Secret of Harvest Home" was very popular when it aired but it has never been made available on DVD as far as I know, but it is available here on YouTube. Of course "The Other" is VERY tame by today's standards but I'm still glad that I got to see it as a child, despite the fear that I was instilled with. Movies now fail to compare at all with some of these classics. Some others worth watching in my opinion are: "The Changeling" "The Sentenil" "The Legacy" "Burnt Offerings" "Black Christmas" (the original) The original miniseries of "Salem's Lot" with James Mason. "Night of the Scarecrow" (1981 made for television version) (As of this time, these are still available on DVD or Blu ray.) - @Sunday, November 5, 2017 6:20 AM

Boy oh boy, i found this movie while searching for best movies of the 70's and I can confirm that this absolutely belongs there. What a refreshing thing to be transported to the era immune to jump scares , no signals and all the other tiresome tropes that plagued today's horror thriller movies. This was smart , precisely crafted, insightful, eerie, unnerving and haunting experience. Although it could be a slow burn for some this film actually creates incredible atmosphere and character relations that may seem wasteful at first but are very rewarding if you stick to the end . It is very elegant and careful construct that perfectly connects all the dots if you have been paying attention and it is frightening when you realize how many ludicrous people live among us.
