Cecilia is a waitress in New Jersey during the Depression and is searching for an escape from her dreary life. Tom Baxter is a dashing young archaeologist in the film "The Purple Rose of Cairo." After losing her job Cecilia goes to see the film in hopes of raising her spirits. Much to her surprise Tom Baxter walks off the screen and into her life. There's only one problem..Tom isn't real. Meanwhile Hollywood is up in arms when they dicover that other Tom Baxters are trying to leave the screen in other theatres. Will Tom ever return and finish the film or will he decide to stay in the real world?

This movie (and Broadway Danny Rose, Sweet and Lowdown, Deconstructing Harry, Zelig, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Vicky Christina Barcelona, Match Point) shows why Woody is one of the greatest directors and storytellers of all time. Every now and then he makes a script that is wholly original and completely different from anything he has ever made before and he just plain old kills it. This movie is perfect in every line and every shot. Today, I saw a play called Six Characters In Search of An Author. I love the idea when on-screen hero becomes real like in The Purple Rose of Cairo or Last Action Hero. Mia Farrow showed brilliant acting. Jeff Daniels and Danny Aiello were great as well. For me, the ending could have been better. Anyway I love this movie. - @Tuesday, January 5, 2010 3:52 PM
