Action Biography Comedy Drama Music Musical

7.1 / 10

1968 was the year that changed the world. And for four young Aboriginal sisters from a remote mission this is the year that would change their lives forever. Around the globe, there was protest and revolution in the streets. Indigenous Australians finally secured the right to vote. There were drugs and the shock of a brutal assassination. And there was Vietnam. The sisters, Cynthia, Gail, Julie and Kay are discovered by Dave, a talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. Billed as Australia's answer to 'The Supremes', Dave secures the sisters their first true gig, and flies them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops. Based on a true story, THE SAPPHIRES is a triumphant celebration of youthful emotion, family and music.

An Australian masterpiece of a movie. Best movie I've seen in ages. One of my favourite movies of all time. - @Wednesday, November 30, 2016 8:56 PM

Major inaccuracies about this movie. I grew up in HK in an entertainer/artiste family and they all did stage entertainment in-country and HK/taiwan for US/australian servicemen during vietnam war 1968/1969. It is embarassing to think of these negative comments, when I have heard only appreciative responses from viet vets for their role as entertainers in the conflict. Too much dealing the race card in the response/comments. If you are interested in real stage entertainers in the vietnam war, there is a good documentary called 'Entertaining Vietnam' (family members were advisors to it). - @Saturday, September 17, 2016 1:30 PM

this movie shouldve been called "the cubic zarconias" or "The Fagguzzi's" Helping our US soldiers in vietnam? how about sending in a few hundred thousand Aussie men to fight? fucking pussies. You send us these 4 whore's? wish i was there in vietnam and when these sapphires came I would use "friendly fire" on them. - @Sunday, January 3, 2016 4:42 PM

Brilliant film seen on TV the other day and I thought 'Dream Girls' was trite. The dynamics between the sisters and also with their cousin was fascinating as well as the overt racism shown towards them at the time. Great comebacks from the girls towards the white racists. - @Saturday, January 2, 2016 1:26 PM

Love this, about group of young Australian girls who travel to Vietnam and entertain US forces fighting there. The whole cast does a fine job and a credit to the director.  One can hope that it opens the doors for all of them to go further. - @Wednesday, March 26, 2014 1:56 AM

This movie was terrible. The music was nice but the writing was soooo confusing. They go for a tryout to get a job singing. The guy offers them a job. They're like "You're a jerk. We don't want a job from you." It's like...Why would they have gone for a job with him if they didn't want a job with him. It was like that the whole movie. "Hey cousin. Want to sing with us?" "After thinking about it. Yes. I would like that." "Well, F you. We don't want you to sing with us." - @Wednesday, August 28, 2013 1:32 AM

I wish idiots wouldn't post links to pirated versions of films on youtube. The people who made "The Sapphires" are not rich and could really use the support. - @Friday, August 16, 2013 9:59 PM

There are so many cultures that where taken over by Europeans: Native Americans, Polynesia, Africa.. there are so many cultures that wish the Europeans would just go away! these travelers have no culture so they take away every one else's everywhere they go --still today!! - @Monday, August 12, 2013 11:47 PM

cont' - He said he would have never gotten a job if he native American was on his certificate, he was born in 1922. So, unless your full African American being a descendent of an African, that is different than being "Black" American, where most are mixed with other cultures. I am Polynesian, French Créole. you have to see the demographics of where people or their family came from even in the southern parts to understand. You may already be educated on most of this but many people do not! - @Monday, August 12, 2013 11:40 PM

@ birdstuckinchimney you may not know this but there are many Black Americans that are part native American...back in the day "Negros" as they called them had it hard enough, but they would have it even harder if their birth certificate had native American. My step dad was half white, 1/4 white and 1/4 black American, but as the rule would have it you were considered black no matter if one drop of blood was "black American" this you may know. - @Monday, August 12, 2013 11:38 PM

firecrakka
What are you talking about... What, besides the music, is borrowing from Black American culture? You haven't got a monopoly on the Vietnam War, Racism and Struggle... You get that right? Maybe you should actually watch the movie before you comment. - @Wednesday, August 7, 2013 3:30 AM

Not only is your insight into this movie very perceptive, your reference to iO Tillett Wright is most appreciated. I just watched the TED Talk you referred to and I learned a lot. I do not identify as LGBQ but because I am a Christian I know many people who hold deep prejudices toward those who do. I will be working very hard to get as many of those people as I can to view iO Tillett Wright's talk. Thanks again :-) - @Sunday, August 4, 2013 7:35 PM

I watched a TED Talk with the photographer iO Tillett Wright whose project Self Evident Truths concentrates on subtle differences and how visibility breeds understanding. She made the amazing statement: "Familiarity is the gateway drug to Empathy." SAPPHIRES is deceptively light on the surface and in the trailer, but digs deep into how ingrained attitudes of discrimination -- external and internalized -- affect these women and the people around them. - @Sunday, August 4, 2013 9:17 AM

Just saw this movie and absolutely loved it! As I watched the film it reminded me of Rabbit Proof Fence, Dreamgirls and The Commitments as well. Great film, I'll definitely be telling my friends about it. - @Sunday, August 4, 2013 7:10 AM

i understand what you're saying, but just to clarify something: Black Americans did not want to be apart of the American mainstream, they were forced to, as they were stolen from Africa and forced to migrateto America and assimilate to European-American culture. Later on in order to gain some semblance of mobility Black Americans had to fulfill White American standards to live. So, yes Black Americans became apart of the American mainstream, but not willingly - @Saturday, August 3, 2013 11:34 PM
