Action Drama War

6.5 / 10

During autumn of 1944, an RAF Hudson carrying a VIP passenger in possession of highly secret information is shot down and ditches in the North Sea. Fighting the elements and trying to keep up morale, the occupants of the aircraft's dinghy talk about their lives awaiting the rescue they hope will come. The film's title reflects the motto of the RAF's Air Sea Rescue Service, one of whose high speed launches battles against its own mechanical problems, enemy action, time and the weather to locate and rescue the downed crew and the vital secret papers they carry.

My Father was a crew chief and waist gunner on a PBY-5 Catalina flying boat. It was of Canadian manufacturer and carried the white and gray camouflage livery of Coastal Command, but with USAAF markings. My Father paid a fellow airman two bottles of scotch whiskey to paint a Vargasesque reclining nose art on it with the name "Miss Pick Up". Now I have seen a similar plan flying at UK air shows, but that plan is not the original. The original "Miss Pick Up" crash landed at sea in the high North Atlantic. I have a photograph of her taken by a crewmen as they paddled away in rubber rafts. In fact that crew was the back up crew, who had voluntiered to take that flight on the cause that my Father's crew had flown three back to back missions. My Father related to me that "Miss Pick Up" worked in conjunction with an RAF rescue launch known as a "Whaleback", and were about seventy feet in length. My memory is sketchy on the subject of call signs, but I believe the Catalina was identified as ALBATROSS, while the Launch was EAGLE, though it could have been the other way around. I'm nearly 65 so it's one or the other. The Launches, crew hosted my Father's crew for dinner once and Father's crew returned the honor. The "Miss Pick Up" rescued many crews and flyers both Allied and German, including one high ranking luftwaffe officer. He threw a fit over having his leather boots cut off. The German officer was transferred to one of those English Country Estates where they kept VIP officers. The CO of that place was a true gentleman. He had his boot maker measure the German and had a pair of boots made, then presented them to the German officer. Your diorama video was quite goodi. It s a really great asset to the history of ASR and couragenes of those men. I thank you very kindly. Best of luck in your future endeavours. - @Sunday, August 19, 2018 1:07 PM
