Genres & Description

Action Horror Thriller

7.5 / 10

En route to visit their grandfather's grave (which has apparently been ritualistically desecrated), five teenagers drive past a slaughterhouse, pick up (and quickly drop) a sinister hitch-hiker, eat some delicious home-cured meat at a roadside gas station, before ending up at the old family home... where they're plunged into a never-ending nightmare as they meet a family of cannibals who more than make up in power tools what they lack in social skills...

Person: I’m not scared of Leatherface and I never will be! Me: So you’re not scared of a fat cannibalistic man who’s wearing another person’s face carrying a chainsaw? Ok. Completely understandable. - @Saturday, November 3, 2018 3:32 AM

Word Unheard
Rex Reed's words must have carried a lot of weight, back in the 70's. They use the same quote from him at the beginning of the trailer, and at the end. - @Sunday, February 11, 2018 12:16 PM

Big screen is the way to go. You get to meet the other fans too, some whom are also frightening. This is my favorite horror film and I think , the best non-supernatural or sci-fi horror movie ever made. Everybody gets hurt in this and it looks real, with a low body count and most deaths off camera. Great stuff with almost no budget. Film festivals and midnight movies might be your best bet now.  Toby Hooper changed horror movies forever with TCM, it is good to see him being honored for it and his other work (Poltergeist, Lifeforce, Fun House, Salem's Lot). A great talent, equal to Romero and Carpenter. SYFY channel showed TCM pretty much unedited about 8am the Saturday after he died. Good for them. His second TCM, way more violent and actually funny, is pretty good too. - @Thursday, October 5, 2017 9:52 PM

The Vault Master
I've seen this on the big screen twice, and watching it with a crowd vastly changed my opinion of TCM. The second time I got to witness a rare old Bryanston print in 35mm. Being crammed into a tiny theater (it seated about 150 people), with old uncomfortable wooden seats, and a sticky floor made for an amazing grindhouse experience. There is no other way you could ever watch the movie and fully enjoy it the way folks did back in '74! - @Wednesday, March 5, 2014 6:21 AM

Rex Reed got it right. This is the most horrorfying motion picture ever made. I saw this when first released and, in almost 40 years, I have yet to see another film that even comes close. It is the ultimate depiction of how cruel and indifferent people are capable of being to each other. Don't we see evidence of that all around us? - @Wednesday, September 4, 2013 11:03 PM

what i like about it is that there's sound effects instead of music blaring out and distracting you from the scene leading up to the frightening points the effects are great most movies now days use way to much music for the scare factor sometimes even blurring out the dialogue - @Sunday, July 14, 2013 5:32 PM

There are two movies that frightened me as an adult: The Blair Witch Project (saw it when I was in college) and this. The Blair Witch Project was not scary after the first viewing, although it's still creepy. This movie frightens me every time I watch it. This is my favorite horror film and one of my favorite movies. It's truly magnificent. - @Thursday, July 11, 2013 3:13 AM

I love how the narrator says "This is the horror movie to end them all" But in reality, this movie pretty much started them all. Sure there were films before it but this one was just... can't even explain it. It's just incredible. - @Wednesday, February 6, 2013 11:37 PM

It's sad that Hollywood has essentially ruined the legacy of this movie by releasing a ton of sequels and prequels, all of which were crap, the same thing happened with the Halloween movies. I really wish Hollywood would release more original horror movies that focused of subtlety and atmosphere to build suspense instead of gore and shock factor, i have no problem with gore in a movie, but the gore should be used to compliment the tension, not to replace it. - @Tuesday, January 8, 2013 1:40 PM

AngelofAnguish
In my opinion, the REMAKE, let alone the two sequels, the TCM: the Next Generation, and the TCM: the Beginning, WASN'T EVEN NECESSARY! Speaking of TCM, I just saw the trailer for the TCM 3D, which is coming out next near, here on YouTube. In my opinion, it looked REALLY DUMB! In my opinion, some people just don't know WHEN to "stop cashing in on a cult classic craze!" - @Sunday, November 4, 2012 3:27 AM

Interesting thing is, he wasn't a serial killer, yet among any cinematic killer I know, this dude is the most horrifying and the things that the character is drawn from Gein, are the morbid things he'd do with body parts of a corpse he would dig up. He killed 1 or 2 people, I always read a different sort here and there, but he was no serial Killer, that just shows you how messed up he was that Leatherface is based around him. And yes, this trailer scares the crap outta me lol - @Monday, April 9, 2012 10:26 PM

My grandmas nickname was Leatherface. Just a short illustration why... She was a veteran from Nam, chain-smoker, heavy drinker who would lay out in the sun for hours and hours just baking in the UV rays. Unfortunately, she is dead now. - @Thursday, March 15, 2012 3:57 PM

to all you people who think this is only a movie it is but you gotta remember this movie was also based on a true story the name texas chainsaw massacre really happened in texas and there was a guy named leatherface and he did do alot of bad crimes he and his family were basically canibals it even says that the texas chainsaw massacre was the most terrible crime in all of history - @Wednesday, January 18, 2012 3:01 AM
