Guys, I've JUST discovered this movie, the 1951 one, I mean, I've discovered the thing 198(I forgot what the last number is here) and the thing 2011, but I've JUST discovered the thing 1951 - @Wednesday, May 17, 2017 5:19 AM

Actually Carpenter is correct, the original magazine story is much closer to his 1982 version. However, its so gory that its almost unwatchable  Howard Hawks version is really superior w dialogue settings etc...Dimitri Tiomkin made a sure fire horror score and the pace of the 1951 film is superb - @Thursday, September 11, 2014 10:17 PM

In my peraonal opinion the remake/prequel is the best - @Thursday, August 29, 2013 12:58 AM

When i first saw this film as a kid it scared the shit out of me. It still does to this day. I think carpenters 1982 version is also brilliant, but there's something about black and white movies that give it that terrifying feel. - @Friday, April 19, 2013 10:37 PM

The first version of this movie is superior to other films of the same time period. It's story is more complex. Instead of saying stupid comments of how this doesn't compare to the 1982 version, just watch some SF movies of this movies' time period and you see it is a very good effort. I like the colorized version because it's easier to see the action. - @Friday, November 16, 2012 11:48 PM

The original in my opinion was better. The acting ..better..the suspense....better...Directing (Howard Hawks) ..better...The dialogue (more intelligent,believable)..better. - @Wednesday, October 3, 2012 3:34 PM

@Johnlindsey289 I'm a hardcore literary SF fan and that has nothing to do with my cinematic preferences; it's because I put writing, acting and direction over FX and gore. And yeah, I saw ET in theaters instead of The Thing, but I didn't have a choice because I was only 6 at the time. The Thing flopped because of poor reviews and bad word of mouth, not because of ET. - @Tuesday, February 21, 2012 3:22 AM

@Johnlindsey289 No, it was far inferior, unless you're only into special effects. Whether or not an adaptation is 100% is irrelevant to actual quality; I don't suppose you complain about all the liberties Blade Runner took with its source material. - @Wednesday, February 15, 2012 11:11 PM

This movie scared the CRAP out of me when I was a little kid. I appreciate it now because this was made during the Cold War when everyone feared an atomic war and there were also many flying saucer sightings in the early 50's - you could feel the anxiety..... - @Tuesday, June 21, 2011 9:54 PM
