Set in beautiful 14th century Sweden, it is the sombre, powerful fable of wealthy land-owning parents whose daughter, a young virgin, is brutally raped and murdered by goat herders after her half sister has invoked a pagan curse. By a bizarre twist of fate, the murderers ask for food and shelter from the dead girl's parents, who, discovering the truth about their erstwhile lodgers, exact a chilling revenge.

I love this beautiful, intense, disturbing and deeply tragic film by master director Ingmar Bergman, who shows brilliantly how a girl's innocence, beauty and kindness could bring out the worst in people, feelings of jealousy, anger, aggression and desire. A sweet, beautiful young woman with the heart of an angel is brutally attacked, raped and murdered because she trusted men who were strangers, but whose hearts were full of malice. Her father, played by the legend Max von Sydow, avenges her cruel end by systematically killing all her attackers after they unknowingly made the mistake of choosing the house of their victim's family when trying to sell her clothes and belongings. Since he is a devoted Christian man, he struggles afterwards with feelings of remorse, even if he cannot regret killing those responsible for assaulting and taking his daughter's life so brutally. He finds redemption by building a church, a place of worship, at the very place where his daughter died.
