It was a good film for a few reasons: the acting of Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Dean Martin, Hope Lange and Barbara Rush, Hugo Friedhofer's evocative score and Joe McDonald's splendid black and white CinemaScope photography. However, Edward Anhalt's script has one rather naive note right in the beginning of the picture. Brando and Rush are celebrating New Year's Eve in a Bavarian ski resort when the crowd erupts into all sorts of "Heil Hitlers." Rush is surprised by this, saying she had seen it in Berlin, but that she didn't expect to see it in this "small" out-of-the-way village in Bavaria. The whole Nazi movement began in conservative Catholic Bavaria while Berlin was the cultural sin city of Europe Hitler vowed to clean up. This faux pas was too bad because the rest of the film was top notch. - @Thursday, January 15, 2015 5:14 AM

Of course GI Ackerman and Christian have much in common, decent fellows fighting each other in a war of destruction. It shows the futility of war and the way it destroys lives.
