6.3 / 10

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed-to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can...but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will's thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

Good idea, good story, good characters, good acting, references to modern technology (Like the guy playing WoW in the background in one scene). It was a bit too long, but I would give it 9/10. - @Saturday, April 26, 2014 1:40 AM

Great movie loved it. There is a bigger message in the movie beyond the AI plot line. This is all about the dangers of Nanotechnology. Will make you think twice about those mysterious chemtrails being sprayed around the globe. - @Monday, April 21, 2014 12:37 AM

The first time a human mind gets divorced from it's flesh it won't be all rainbows and kittens, but it isn't a decent premise for a disaster movie either.  I at least hope this film will be more like Demon Seed, than The Forbin Project. - @Thursday, February 13, 2014 9:56 AM

YES! I've been waiting for a film like this! Now, as long as it doesn't turn out to be some kind of anti-technology fear-mongering BS, we'll be OK.... - @Wednesday, January 29, 2014 4:59 AM

Depp has always been one of my favorite actors. I loved how he moved to France to avoid the media frenzy in the US, though he has returned recently, albeit for tax reasons. I get skeptical when I hear of all this talk of trans-humanism, the singularity and emerging AI. The unplugging "RIFT" cult speaks to the sense, that many (at some level) have about wanting to move away from our current technology-centric paradigm, which among many things, is replacing jobs faster than we can create. I am certainly no tech hater, the internet is a kick-ass tool like anything else, but when it starts consuming your life or replacing life, films like these serve as cautionary tales; one's that have been brought up before like T2 (1991), The Lawnmower Man (1992), Ghost in the Shell (1995), The Matrix (1999) etc. I'm guessing that Evelyn who mistakenly unleashes "Transcendence" will make a final appeal to his digitally evolved consciousness. And demand that it control its ego and relent before destroying the world as we know it. In the end - from my narrow perspective - this movie is a love story that goes horribly wrong, LOL... - @Wednesday, January 29, 2014 1:33 AM

I know the concept of uploading your mind to a computer since Ghost in the Shell, and it's freaky in some way. But i never knew how creepy it is to think if it was in reality, thanks to this film. Definitely can't wait to see it! - @Saturday, January 25, 2014 11:13 AM

The only individual who could possibly see this trailer as a viable spark for debate on the subject of transhumanism is one who thinks a facile, soft-sci fiction packed with meaningless babble and tired clichés has any bearing on reality- and I am willing to indulge myself in hypocrisy with feckless abandon in order to make my point. You plug yourselves daily into a world that exists only as a tangle of binary data, and interact with a billion virtual identities as far removed from the reality of the source as a D&D character sheet. With each passing year, you immerse yourselves more wholly in it, absorbing new technologies as quickly as they come, and with far greater ease than the invention of television. Handwriting nears obsolescence, books are increasing archaic, and spoken communications are degenerating to the level of "txt spk" jargon. People educate themselves on the state of the world by watching videos of people talking about other people talking about people watching videos on the state of the world, and think themselves scientists because they read that a car can run on water. Everything is a conspiracy, and everyone is stupid, and the cyber revolution will end humanity... according to the fucking moron who can't write his own name correctly, head plugged into a computer with a shit bucket next to it. The singularity is not an overnight revelation - as we grow more decadent, ignorant, and stupid, we shall rely ever more upon technologies built by far more capable people to perform the task of far less capable people. Yesterday we had mobile phones and desktop computers, but today we have smart devices and mobile internet. Yesterday we had television and credit cards, but today we have wave pay, digital banking, and global shopping markets. Yesterday we had prosthetics and antibiotics, tomorrow we will have vat-grown replacement body parts, cybernetics, nano-robotic surgery, artificial intelligence, and the continuing loss of distinction between man and machine... and you'll be the doddering old nutter in the rest home screaming and shouting about new-fangled nonsense and transhumanist blah-blah while your progeny surf the planet inside their own heads. You'll either be long gone before the singularity, or you won't even notice it happened while you were making coffee. There is no further evolution for us without continuing technological advancement. The alternative is to start culling populations with rigid controls and licensing of reproduction, and start teaching children exclusively how to farm- only farmers will get to live outside the crowded, filthy ghettos where nobody can wipe their arses because nobody trusts the technology to mass-produce shit rags. Whether the singularity ever comes is a moot point - we either advance with gusto, and the hope that we can survive long enough to overcome our limitations, or we languish in our current insupportable state until the collapse of technology markets forces us to treat humans like cattle in a bid to curb their collective consumption and growth. Transhumanism is already here. We've already begun the journey - we're lost without our technology on a personal scale as well as industrial. Our children will leave us behind, as their own will them. You want an intelligent debate on transhumanism? You (the internet-connected, smart-device enhanced human) are a better subject than some high-budget Lawnmower Man rip-off. You're the prototype, and you're already obsolete. - @Monday, January 6, 2014 2:58 PM
