An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage.

This movie ROCKS ! Everything came together - Spielberg, Tom, Tripods, Action, Horror, John Williams (sounds like Jaws sometimes), etc. Yeah, it gets slow in the basement, kinda like when you go to a rock concert and the drummer takes a solo, That's the time to hit the fridge, hit the snackbar, hit the bathroom, etc, but it's still awesome. Check out the extras on the Blu-Ray, they're pretty extensive about how they made this movie. I do have to say though, I would have been happier with LESS of Dakota's SHRIEKING through the ENTIRE movie ! Man, she made my ears bleed. Why not cut that down by 50 % ? Anyway, awesome movie ! What I don't understand is why wouldn't the military have discovered some way to shut off their force fields in some way? Remember in Independence Day, Will shut off their power. Why not shut off or limit the source of the power of their shields? Like shut down grids or wherever they were obtaining their electromagnetic power from. I'm not a scientist, but I just don't see why the military wouldn't have found a way to pierce through their force fields. Or, why not attack the aliens with various types of weapons instead of explosives? And, the aliens would be smart enough to come here not wearing clothing in the first place, so the bacteria ending doesn't make sense.
