West Side Story is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet". The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway - whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what's happened, tragedy strikes and doesn't stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.

I don't know if I would say that NATALIE WOOD was not a major star, she had already done Rebel with a Cause, Marjorie Morningstar, Splendor in the Grass (for which she was nominated) and of course she had starred (as a little girl) in Miracle on 34th Street, so I'm not quite sure how Rita Moreno could say Natalie was not "a major star". - @Thursday, September 14, 2017 2:26 AM

I'm Puerto Rican and I admire Ms. Moreno's accomplishments but damn she always diminishes Natalie Wood. She always comes off as jealous and petty of Natalie. Natalie Wood was one of a very few actresses who started out as a child star and achieved stardom as an adult. When Natalie Wood made West Side Story she was a STAR in every sense of the word and for Rita Moreno to sit there and say that Natalie was not a star is a slap in the face to Natalie who is no longer with us to defend herself. I am Puerto Rican too, i admire Rita Moreno, because she told it like it is, back then, and now Puerto Rican women, actresses, models, they all get the worst roles to play they pay low, and its hard, unless you have wealthy parents, or an excellent support network, i've had to take crappy acting roles, under paid modeling gigs, only entertainment people understand you pay your dues and you just get up and keep trying again.
