Kind of ironic that the trailer uses music from the Belushi/Aykroyd/Spielberg film 1941, a flick Murray (mostly) playfully razzed in his movie review Weekend Update segment on SNL. Murray was a tough kid in those days. If he was looking for trouble everyone got out of his way. Imagine him and HST hanging out, drinking, during the summer of making this movie. A great book on SNL said they got into a drunken argument over who could "out-Houdini" whom. HST tied Murray to a chair and threw him in a pool. Here we find a film that only idiots would say is better than Gilliams take on Dr. Thompson's gonzo literally journalism. Why "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" was a much better film, was due to the fact that it didn't turn something great into a cheap shot in the guts, slapstick comedy. Fear and loathing was a better film, not only because it portrays Thompson's "Gonzo" story telling to a tee, but also it shows the story more through how Thompson saw it, not us watching him run around like an Saturday night live amateur. I like Murrays acting, and he is probably one of my higher rated comedians, but poor writing and directing of this film, aiming too far to create a comedy, fuelled more on over exaggerated jokes, sort of makes this feel more like the three stooges, or a Jerry Lewis film. I wouldn't say it's Murrays fault for this film being as bad as it is, I would rather say that whoever in the studio who green lighted this idea was utterly stupid. Great !.... Murray did a fabulous job !... Not easy to catch essence of Hunter but he did in this old classic..... I liked Hunter because even despite his political antics I feel he had great talent , loved Nixon, football, America and was a gun-nut too.... FunnyFunnyFunny, only one HST.
