Action Drama

8.0 / 10

George and Martha are a middle aged married couple, whose charged relationship is defined by vitriolic verbal battles, which underlies what seems like an emotional dependence upon each other. This verbal abuse is fueled by an excessive consumption of alcohol. George being an associate History professor in a New Carthage university where Martha's father is the President adds an extra dimension to their relationship. Late one Saturday evening after a faculty mixer, Martha invites Nick and Honey, an ambitious young Biology professor new to the university and his mousy wife, over for a nightcap. As the evening progresses, Nick and Honey, plied with more alcohol, get caught up in George and Martha's games of needing to hurt each other and everyone around them. The ultimate abuse comes in the form of talk of George and Martha's unseen sixteen year old son, whose birthday is the following day.

What a lousy trailer! ...tells you nothing. I saw the film first run and it shocked the sh*t out of me, ...great direction and acting in an examination of the co-existence of love/hate as waring partners in one intensely human relationship. - @Tuesday, May 15, 2018 12:00 PM

I'm young, but I know much about them. As people, they weren't bad. They might have been testy now and then, but they didn't much to annoy the public. - @Saturday, August 3, 2013 8:08 PM

Albee has denied and still does, that George and Martha are stand-ins or coded as a bitchy gay couple. It was NOT intended to be four men (Honey's pregnancy makes no sense) but rather two men and two women like we see. Just because he's gay himself, doesn't mean there's a secret hidden agenda. - @Wednesday, May 29, 2013 2:28 PM

I think that it is brilliant that Albee wrote the parts of George and Martha as an abstract homosexual couple situated in the concrete environment of a small college town in New England in 1960's America. Uta Hagen and Mercedes McCambridge were among the earlier actresses to have played Martha on the stage. Not exactly Mary Pickford types. Casting Liz in the film version to further confuse the broader American movie audience was an exceedingly intelligent move by the producers. - @Saturday, May 4, 2013 4:01 AM

People howled when it was announced that Liz would play the part of Martha in the film version of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?". She had never played a role on Broadway and this was considered such a stage part, not one for a Hollywood actress trying to impress critics and fans for the wrong reasons. On stage, the role had been played by very masculine types (Albee had written the parts of George and Martha as a gay couple). But in 1966, Liz surprised the world with her craft. Oscar # 2. - @Sunday, April 28, 2013 6:33 AM

I would agree if this were any other actor but Burton ... his voice makes every line poetry. What a pleasure to hear him speak Albee's words, regardless of his accent (my opinion, at least). - @Wednesday, April 11, 2012 12:58 AM

@colderbeer Yes, and even though Richard Burton had stage training and experience, Elizabeth Taylor wasn't a stage actress at all, came up as a girl from the Hollywood studio system. But, clearly, Taylor must have studied acting somewhere along the line, taken some classes at the Actor's Studio or at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Because this is basically a filmed play, which required a level of proficiency not normally held by mere film actors. - @Saturday, November 19, 2011 4:36 AM

@RichardElden What a horribly cruel thing to post! Even if you don't appreciate someone's acting ability (or lack thereof), why would you wish a painful illness and death upon that person? - @Saturday, November 19, 2011 4:24 AM
