Parallels between my life and this film include: I live in Humboldt County on the edge of Redwood Forest (where this was filmed). I've isolated myself completely, the redwoods save me (I even dream about them), I smoke all the time to help my depression and I work with the same stuff as the main character in this movie. I've been spiraling downwards lately, so this movie scared me a little. This was filmed here so it was extra creepy seeing her go to the exact same places I go when I'm sad. Just saw the movie. Was absolutely stunning, but plot coherence was lacking. This may have been intentional, but it gave the sensation of an acid trip. I was not able to decipher the broad thrust of the film beyond artistically expressing the emotions of Dunst's character, and maybe asking a few questions about mental illness, death and grief (interesting considering those were the main elements of Melancholia). After watching an interview with the directors, I'm skeptical that there really is anymore that can be added to an analysis of the film.
