Disagree about the trailer - I think it's fine. How many mistakes can Landis make in about 4 minutes? - @Saturday, October 14, 2017 3:17 PM

Good observation from Landis that a picture so melodramatic and stylized should not work, but does work brilliantly. James Mason's performance is a true standout. Judy Garland gives a great performance but she appears somewhat tired, or a tiny bit off. The supporting cast is outstanding. Jack Carson is truly nasty and as Landis points out Charles Bickford is effective as the surprisingly compassionate studio head. I think Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne were strongly influenced by this film to write for the awful remake with Kristofferson and Streisand, and you can also see the influence in their script for "Up Close And Personal" with Redford and Pfeiffer. It's sad that George Cukor died the day before he was to see the film as restored by Ronald Haver. It's not totally restored, however, but you will never see the "pan and scan" or the cut version, despite Landis' warnings. - @Monday, September 4, 2017 2:40 AM

Jack, not all of Judy's fans are gay. The majority of her fans aren't gay. A lot of her Straight fans don't admit, or tell people that they're Huge fans of hers for the obvious reasons. - @Friday, August 25, 2017 4:20 AM

As others have noted, Judy was not fired from MGM after Annie Get Your Gun. Also to say "she didn't work for 5 years" between leaving MGM and making A Star Is Born is incorrect. She left MGM in 1950, did radio work with Bing Crosby in the months after, travelled to London to play the Palladium for 4 weeks, went on tour around the UK, re-opened the Palace Theatre on Broadway, performed at the Palace for 19 weeks, won a special Tony Award, toured the west coast with the palace show and recorded 4 songs for Columbia Records! Not to mention had a baby between all of that and starting work on A Star Is Born in 1953. - @Wednesday, January 13, 2016 10:40 PM

Judy Garland's real name was FRANCIS Gumm, not Judy Gumm. Hell, even I know that, and I'm not even gay. - @Saturday, January 17, 2015 12:42 AM

Landis is wrong-After Judy was fired from Annie Get Your Gun Judy did Summerstock (1951) and then was fired from MGM-she also did NOT do the swannee "shtick" for "the next 30 yrs" on stage as she died 15 yrs later - she did however perform all her hits in concerts-btw this is NOT the whole trailer for the movie-there were multiple trailers and trust me when you listen to the trailers (vs only the voice of landis over the trailer) all the trailers hold up....btw, wtf is Landis sifting thru trailers of old movies and telling us which ones suck----he doesnt have any background - hey john, get a life and the facts - @Wednesday, November 5, 2014 6:14 PM

Great comment: "I think the Jack Carson character wrote this." I agree: a great film but an awful, mindless trailer. - @Saturday, October 12, 2013 5:28 AM
